Men's volleyball taken down by Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. -- The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team began its final two-game stretch of the regular season at Randolph-Macon Friday night. The Yellow Jackets took all three sets from the Blue Jays to climb into a three-way tie with E-town and Eastern Mennonite for seventh in the Continental Volleyball Conference standings.

Randolph-Macon (10-13, 4-6 CVC) fed one of the leading hitters in the conference, Lee Olenyik, most of the night. Top-five in kills and kills per set for RMC, Olenyik had a match-high 21 kills. Setter Brian Stephen finished the night with 32 assists.

Elizabethtown (11-17, 4-6 CVC) built up a 7-3 lead in the first set as Joey Nelson and Nick Baxter had consecutive kills to give the Jays a four-point lead. E-town was ahead 8-5 when the Yellow Jackets went on an 11-0 run to take a 16-8 lead.

Points from Baxter, Ethan Maurer, and Nelson made it close, 21-18, but Randolph-Macon closed out the set to take a 1-0 lead.

Another big run in the second set shot the Yellow Jackets in front by 10 after trailing by two. They would win it 25-13 to grab a 2-0 advantage.

Maurer helped give the Blue Jays a 16-12 edge in the third set as Elizabethtown looked to extend it. Back and forth the set went as EC led by two, 22-20. Three straight by the Yellow Jackets had them two away from the sweep. Nick Spangler set Maurer for back-to-back kills to give Elizabethtown a 24-23 lead and set point.

Olenyik saved his team with a kill to tie it at 24-24, but a service error once again put the Blue Jays a point away from taking the set. Unable to take advantage, Randolph-Macon was able to tie it, take the lead, and finish off the set and the sweep.

Baxter had 10 kills for Elizabethtown while Maurer ended with nine. Spangler recorded 18 assists. Maurer had a team-high five service aces.

The Blue Jays close out the regular season at Marymount (Va.) tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
