Holdren closes out baseball's win over #4 Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Kelly Holdren entered the bottom of the ninth with a three-run lead and closed out the Elizabethtown College baseball team's 7-4 win over No. 4 Swarthmore on Friday. Robbie Bertucio drove in a pair of runs and he and Tyler McGonigle each homered for the Blue Jays.

Swarthmore (12-4), who moved up to No. 4 in the latest national rankings, had won 12 of their first 15 games of the season. The Garnet were also second on the NCAA in team batting average (.373) heading into the day's matchup with Elizabethtown (6-13).

Joseph Sarich held Swarthmore to just four hits over six innings of work and as a staff, the Blue Jays only allowed five total in the game. Sarich struck out five batters in his six innings of work before Reece Jones, Anthony Cameron, and Holdren limited the Garnet a one hit over the final three frames.

Swarthmore grabbed a 3-0 lead for 2018 Third Team All-American pitcher Ricky Conti. While he held the Jays scoreless through four innings, E-town got to the senior hurler beginning in the fifth.

Arley Shepherd doubled in Bertucio to start the scoring for the Blue Jays. An inning later, Mike Christy sent a double down the left field line to plate Anthony Knight and bring EC within a run at 3-2. Riley McGinley's RBI ground out tied the game. Bertucio put Elizabethtown in front with his second homer of the year, a two-run shot to left.

McGonigle registered the first home run of his career in the seventh and Derek Manning singled home Knight to make it 7-4. Cameron pitched the seventh and the eighth and struck out two batters. Holdren didn't allow a hit in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

The E-town batters tagged Conti for seven runs on six hits to chase the right-hander after 6.1 innings. Sarich got the win, his second of the year.

The Blue Jays are at Messiah on Monday, April 1.
