Moravian limits softball in sweep

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team played its first home doubleheader of the season at The Nest on Sunday, March 24. Moravian took both games from the Blue Jays, 10-1 and 9-0 in six innings.

Game 1: Moravian 10, Elizabethtown 1
Moravian (13-3, 4-0 Landmark) scored out of the gate with a run in the top of the first on an RBI ground out. Elizabethtown (6-12, 0-4 Landmark) answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own.

Kady Johnson led off with a single through the left side, sending the second pitch she saw between shortstop and third base. She was on third for Paige Phillips, who drove in her freshman teammate with two outs in the inning. Phillips singled through the right side and allowed Johnson to score easily and tie the game up at 1-1.

It was the only run the Jays would get off of starter Paige Lesher, as two of E-town's three hits in the game came in the first inning.

The Greyhounds grabbed the lead in the second with another run to go up 2-1. They added two more in the fifth and scored six in the seventh for the 10-1 final.

Game 2: Moravian 9, Elizabethtown (F/6)
Moravian kept its foot on the gas in game two, going up 6-0 through four innings. Meghan Bauer, who finished out game one for the Greyhounds, pitched effectively for six innings in game two and only allowed three hits to Elizabethtown. Emma Varrato, Kaitlyn Witmer, and Courtney Fitzsimons had the hits for the Blue Jays.

Bauer struck out eight batters for MOR. Sarah Hartinger came on in relief for E-town in both games.

Elizabethtown hosts Ursinus at The Nest on Thursday, March 28, for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
