WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team outhit Catholic on Saturday in both games of a Landmark Conference doubleheader, yet the Cardinals still won both games over the Blue Jays.
Game 1: Catholic 6, Elizabethtown 1
It was a scoreless game through the top of the third until Catholic (6-6, 2-0 Landmark) broke through with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Kady Johnson broke up the shutout in the fifth inning with a single down the right field line to score
Courtney Fitzsimons. The sophomore doubled to lead off the inning and was on third after
Brinley Schmidt's single to right center. The Cardinals still led 2-1 after five.
A four-run sixth inning pushed CATHU ahead by five, 6-1, entering the top of the seventh and Elizabethtown down to its final three outs. Scott retired three straight Blue Jays to end the game. She pitched all seven innings for Catholic to get the win.
Emma Varrato was 3-for-3 in game one for the Jays.
Game 2: Catholic 2, Elizabethtown 1 (F/8)
Lindsey Fasolo scored on a passed ball and Elizabethtown (5-9, 0-2 Landmark) had a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Blue Jays held the lead until the fifth when the Cardinals tied it up 1-1 on a ground out RBI.
Neither side could produce a run over the final two innings so extras was needed. E-town had a runner in scoring position as
Ashley Mistichelli walked to start the eighth.
Jillian Meitzler moved
Catherine Amos up to second after Amos came on to pinch run. E-town couldn't generate the run to take the lead as Scott came on to pitch in relief to get the final two outs of the inning and give Catholic a chance for the walkoff.
A triple to lead off the bottom half of the frame for Catholic put the game-winning run on third. A sacrifice fly the next at-bat brought that runner home and the Cardinals came away with the sweep after a 2-1 win in eight innings.
Taylor Herman, Fasolo,
Paige Phillips,
Kaitlyn Witmer, and Schmidt each had hits in game two for Elizabethtown.
The Blue Jays are at Dickinson for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, March 18, at 5 & 7 p.m.
