Defense clamps down on St. Mary's (Md.) in fourth, Blue Jays win 9-5 over Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- After a halftime lead, the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team found itself down in the third quarter. The Blue Jays scored four consecutive goals to retake the lead and the defense shut out St. Mary's (Md.) in the fourth quarter as E-town won 9-5 for its for win of the season. Brandon Sankey, Andrew Watts, and Mike DiGenova each scored twice to lead the Jays.

Benjamin O'Connor had Elizabethtown's (1-1) first opportunity at goal in the game just over two minutes into Saturday's non-conference contest. Ross Snodderly made one of his 10 saves on the freshman's shot. Watts beat the St. Mary's (Md.) (1-2) goalie at 11:15 to make it 1-0. Mike Scrafano provided the assist on the first of Watts' two in the game. Scrafano made it 2-0 later in the first.

Michael Bucci cut the lead in half with 1:32 left in the first quarter to put it at 2-1 heading into the second.

DiGenova the first of his two goals 41 seconds into the second quarter as E-town was back up by a pair, 3-1. The Blue Jays got through a man-down situation unscathed, but less than a minute after play was even, Ben Claffee got the Seahawks back within a goal with 5:50 left in the half.

Starting goalie Tom Mahoney only needed one save the remainder of that time to send Elizabethtown into the break ahead by a goal, 3-2. The junior had a game-high 11 saves.

St. Mary's went ahead by a goal in the third quarter on back-to-back goals scored 28 seconds apart by Erich Wuesthoff and Dominic Venanzi. A little over a minute later, Brandon Sankey responded for the Jays. This came after Snodderly made two initial stops on Scott Nizolak and Cameron Goodling. Nizolak picked up the groundball after Goodling's attempt was stopped and dished it to Sankey for the goal to tie the score at 4-4.

Sankey's goal started a 4-0 run for Elizabethtown, who went back ahead 7-4. Nick Cost put home his first career goal at 4:16 of the third, DiGenova took Scrafano's pass for his second of the game at 3:39, and Nizolak got in the goal scorer's column with his first at 1:35. Goodling registered the assist on Nizolak's goal that put the score at 7-4.

The Seahawks got one back late in the third on Ray LaPlaca's goal with 1:03 to go.

Watts gave the Blue Jays a bit more breathing room 58 seconds into the fourth quarter after Cost found the senior for the tally. Sankey scored the quarter's only other goal as E-town shut out St. Mary's in the fourth quarter to take the 9-5 win. Mahoney needed just two saves in the fourth to finish off the game and earn his first win of the season.

The Blue Jays will play at Dickinson on Wednesday, February 27, at 7 p.m.
