ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Moravian was able to fend off the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team on its Senior Day as the Greyhounds came out of Thompson Gymnasium with an 83-75 win over the Blue Jays.
Connor Moffatt posted 16 points and 10 rebounds for E-town while
Ethan DuBois and
Bryce Greene both reached double figures for EC. Jimmy Murray had a game-high 19 points for Moravian.
Elizabethtown's (10-14, 5-9 Landmark) seniors got the team off to a fast start.
Jamil Pines-Elliott found his twin brother,
Jalil Pines-Elliott, ahead of the pack up the court and shot a pass up that the senior received for an easy bucket. Moments later,
Brandon Berry would find
Josh Christ for a three-pointer near the top of the key to make it 5-0 through the first minute of action.
Moravian (17-8, 10-4 Landmark) used the deep ball to get right back into it. CJ Barnes dropped in a pair of treys and Shon Wilson gave the Greyhounds a 9-7 lead with 16:02 left in the first half with another.
Matt Thomas, the Landmark's field goal percentage leader going into the game, got inside for a layup to tie the score up a possession later.
A 16-4 run put Moravian up by 13, 31-18, with 7:41 remaining in the half, but Elizabethtown fought its way back into the game, starting with a trey from
Ethan DuBois. DuBois found
Jamil Pines-Elliott in the left corner for a three that cut the deficit to seven. Down nine, Thomas and Moffatt made consecutive shots to bring E-town with 33-29 with 5:19 to go. Moffatt drilled a three with 1:05 showing on the clock and the Blue Jays were down by just a point at the break.
The game was within a possession each way for the first eight minutes of the second half. Murray's three put the Greyhounds ahead by four and, after a miss at the E-town end, Oneil Holder's fast break layup put MOR ahead by six. Two free throws from
Jamil Pines-Elliott coupled with a three-pointer from Berry made it a one-point affair, 51-50, with 11:27 left in regulation.
Moravian couldn't shake Elizabethtown. Each time the Greyhounds started to build momentum offensively, the Blue Jays answered. A shot from distance by Greene put the game at 63-61 in favor of the guests.
The Jays were down three with time winding down into the last few minutes. A missed layup followed by Barnes' three ended up being a pivotal five-point swing for Moravian, who, instead of being up by three had the layup gone down, led by eight after Barnes drained the three-pointer.
The lead proved to be too much for the Jays to overcome. E-town extended the game and forced the Greyhound to the foul line. Holder, Murray, and Brazukas each hit their foul shots.
Hugh McLaughlin III capped off the game with a made jumper from the right elbow with five seconds to go, but Moravian had the game in hand and ran out the clock for the 83-75 win.
The seniors combined for 28 points in the game, their final game on the Thompson Gymnasium hardwood. Moffatt, DuBois, and Greene each hit five shots from the floor to tie for a team-high.
