NEW LONDON, CONN. -- Coast Guard jumped out ahead of the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team in Saturday's season opener at Cadet Memorial Field 5-0 in the first quarter and only allowed one goal to the Blue Jays in a 10-1 win to start 2019. Mike Scrafano tallied the lone goal for E-town.

Ian Logan, Colin Cashin, and Will Iorio each scored for Coast Guard (1-0) in the first five minutes as the Bears established the early advantage. The Jays had a few cracks at goal two minutes into the non-conference contest, but Alex Filbert had a pair of shots saved by Bears' goalie Trey Johnson. Ben Hiltebeitel also had a go at goal, but Johnson made his third save in 48 seconds to keep it 0-0.

Down 5-0 in the second quarter of play, Scrafano took a pass from Hiltebeitel and was able to beat Johnson for Elizabethtown's (0-1) first goal of the season. The goal came a man up as the Blue Jays had the extra man opportunity thanks to an offside penalty on Coast Guard. Logan Morin scored his second of the game with 3:23 left before the half to cancel out Scrafano's goal and restore the five goal lead. CGA led 6-1 at halftime.

The Jays' attack was held in check over the final two quarters as they were only able to register eight shots compared to 21 for Coast Guard. The Bears scored twice in both the third and fourth quarters and shut out E-town in the second half of play to win the game 10-1.

Morgin recorded a hat trick for the Bears and Johnson finished with 13 saves. Jack Myers, Tom Mahoney, and Brandon Calle all saw time in goal for the Blue Jays. Mahoney made a team-high eight saves for EC.

Elizabethtown is at St. Mary's (Md.) next Saturday, February 23, for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
