SCRANTON, Pa. – The Elizabethtown men's basketball team made a late surge, but could not complete the comeback, as they fell to Marywood, 87-80, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 3-4 on the season, while the Pacers improve to 5-6 overall.
Elizabethtown was led by senior
Bryce Greene who finished the game with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists. He is three points away from becoming the 33
rd player in program history to reach 1,000 points. Joining Greene in double-figures was senior
Connor Moffatt (18), sophomore
Anthony Hawkins (13) and senior Ethan Dubois (11). Sophomore
Zach Nannen grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Junior Jack DeGroot scored a game-high 24 points to pace Marywood. Freshman Jake Curnow finished two rebounds shy of a double-double, tallying 19 points with eight rebounds.
The Blue Jays ran out to a nine point lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half, as junior
Tyler Rinehimer completed the three-point play from the line, making the score 19-10.
Elizabethtown continued to lead through the majority of the opening stanza, holding an eight point advantage (32-24) after a jumper by Greene in the paint with just over six minutes remaining in the period.
The Pacers, however, continued to chip away at the Blue Jays' lead and moved ahead for the first time in the game, as senior Zach Tinkham buried a three pointer, making the score 35-34 with 3:24 on the clock. Marywood held onto the slim advantage at the intermission, taking a 41-40 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Pacers slowly began to put distance between themselves and Elizabethtown, creeping out to a 10 point lead after a layup by sophomore Jason Holman made the score 67-57 with 7:30 remaining in the game.
The Blue Jays closed within three points late in the final stanza twice, but could not get any closer, as Marywood wrapped up its fifth win of the season, 87-80.
Elizabethtown was 30-64 (46.9%) from the field, and shot 33.3% (8-24) from three. Marywood knocked down half of its shots in the game, shooting 50% (32-64) from the field, while making 11-24 (45.8%) from beyond the arc.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Baltimore, Md. for an exhibition game against Division I, Loyola. Opening tip for the game is set for 2 p.m.
