Scranton prevails over field hockey in semifinals

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Vying for a spot in Saturday's Landmark Championship, the Elizabethtown College field hockey team traveled back to Scranton for a rematch with the Royals, this time in a semifinal contest at Weiss Field. Scranton advanced to the title game with a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Gracie McClatchy scored a little over a minute into the game for Scranton (12-7) to give them an early 1-0 lead. The Royals held Elizabethtown (6-13) shotless in the first quarter.

McClatchy had an attempt saved by goalie Madeline Kachel in the second quarter, but the rebound came to Brianna Witt, who was able to score her fifth of the season to make it 2-0.

The Blue Jays were able to earn multiple penalty corners in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but couldn't generate any offense off of them as Scranton defended and didn't allow a shot on any of the three tries. Later in the quarter, Chloe Smith sent a shot in on goal, but Claire McAllister made the save.

The Royals pushed the lead to 3-0 late in the third on Allie Benadon's goal off a Scranton penalty corner.

Lauren Scheib led E-town with a team-high three shots and two on goal. Kachel made five saves in the game.
