Lawson breaks Landmark record as Blue Jays clinch No. 2 seed, beat Catholic 3-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Lydia Lawson-Leigh Ungerleider connection was in sync for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team on Saturday in the regular season finale with Catholic. Each player assisted on the other's goal in the game as the Blue Jays clinched the second seed in the Landmark Conference with a 3-0 win over the Cardinals. Lawson's goal broke the Landmark Conference career record.

Catholic (8-7-3, 4-2-1 Landmark) had the Blue Jays on the ropes from the opening whistle, putting Elizabethtown (11-4-1, 6-1 Landmark) under pressure from the start. Though the Cardinals finished the game with more shots and corners, it was the Jays that finished off their chances better than their opposition.

Minutes following a save from Trinity Soto, Lawson played a ball from the E-town half of the field that Ungerleider was able to run on to and in on goal. With the keeper closing in, the sophomore slid the ball left of the diving attempt and into the net for her fourth of the season to put Elizabethtown ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute.

One final save before the half from Soto sent the Jays into the break holding onto the one-goal cushion.

Elizabethtown withstood the push from Catholic and converted on another chance in the 59th minute. Ungerleider was on the ball near the touch line on the right side of the goal. Her cross was elevated just enough to go over the outstretched hands of the goalie. The ball floated toward the back post, where the defender attempted to play the ball out, but instead it deflected into the open net to make it 2-0 in favor of the Jays.

E-town was fortunate in the 77th minute as the Cardinals struck the woodwork not once, but twice in the span of ten seconds. Sarah Brush's curling shot from the left side of the 18 hit the outside of the far post. That rebound went to Elizabethtown Johnson, who smashed a shot that struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced straight down, and was cleared away before further damage could be done.

Like Ungerleider's goal in the first half, the third for Elizabethtown came just moments after a stop from their goalkeeper. On the counter, Ungerleider slipped Lawson in on goal, where she was able to fake out the goalie, juke left and essentially dribble the ball into the goal, touching in around the six for her record-breaking goal, the 60th of the her career and 20th of the season.

Soto made nine saves in total for the Blue Jays and earned her third clean sheet of the season.

The women's soccer team gets back into the Landmark Conference playoffs for the second time under coach Amy Hough. It will be the program's first home semifinal game since 2014 when the Blue Jays also finished 6-1 in the Landmark. Elizabethtown will host Scranton on Wednesday, November 6, at 7 p.m.
