Men's soccer senior day spoiled by #21 Catholic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team celebrated its Senior Day at Jane Hoover Field on Saturday, but No. 21 Catholic spoiled the party as the Cardinals scored a goal in each half to shut out the Blue Jays 2-0.

Getting the start on senior day, Duncan George had the first chance of the game, getting a shot in on Catholic (16-2-1, 7-0-0 Landmark) goalie Jack Long, who made the save just 1:30 into the regular season finale for both teams in the Landmark.

Andrew Laurenzano put the Cardinals ahead in the 20th minute with a curling shot from outside the 18 that found the upper corner of the goal.

Edward Rainey had a chance for Elizabethtown (10-5-2, 4-2-1 Landmark) in the waning moments of the first half as he ran onto a ball played into the top of 18 off a set piece. His effort went just wide of the goal. Moments later, Garrett Winchilla's shot was stopped by Long with just over half a minute to go in the first half.

Kelvin Del Cid made a pair of saves in the early portion of the second half to keep the Blue Jays within a goal.

Long came off his line to punch out a ball in the 67th minute, and Connor Rathsam latched onto the loose ball well outside the 18. He put a shot on target, but Mitch Ford toed the goal line and headed the ball over the goal to deny E-town the game-tying tally.

It would be a two-goal swing as eight minutes later, Ben Alexander headed home a cross from Adam Melendez that gave Catholic a 2-0 advantage with a little over 15 minutes to go.

Long made one last stop on JD Haaf with under a minute remaining and the Cardinals held off Elizabethtown.

The men's soccer team will head to Scranton on Tuesday, November 5, as the third seed in the Landmark Men's Soccer Championship. The Blue Jays will take on the Royals, the two seed, at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
