WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Though the Elizabethtown College field hockey team lost on a late goal by Catholic, the Blue Jays still qualified for the Landmark postseason by virtue of a Juniata loss to Scranton.
Lauren Scheib had the lone goal for E-town in a 2-1 loss to the Cardinals.
Meghan Shallow scored 4:23 into Saturday's night game for Catholic (12-7, 6-1 Landmark) to give her team a 1-0 lead early on.
Elizabethtown (6-12, 4-3 Landmark) was held without a shot in the opening quarter, but found a chance on a penalty corner five minutes into the second.
Chloe Smith's initial shot was blocked, but the rebound went to Scheib, who was able to get an attempt on goal. Maysen Elliott made the save for the Cardinals.
Madeline Kachel had two saves in the quarter for the Blue Jays to keep it 1-0 at the half.
The Jays tied the game in the third quarter off a corner play.
Olivia Beachley's insert eventually wound up on the stick of Scheib and her shot reached the back of the cage for her seventh of the season to make it 1-1 5:47 into the third quarter. Smith provided the assist on the senior's goal.
Anna Baffone gave Catholic the lead with less than five minutes to go and the Cardinals held E-town without a shot to hang on for a 2-1 win.
Elizabethtown and Juniata both finished 4-3 in the conference, but because of E-town's head-to-head win over the Eagles, the Blue Jays claimed the final spot in the Landmark tournament.
