LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team used its team speed to its advantage Sunday afternoon in the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament consolation game against host Franklin & Marshall. The Blue Jays took over the fourth quarter and beat the Diplomats, 88-79, led by
Lydia Lawson's game-high 27 points. All five starters were in double figures for E-town.
Elizabethtown (3-1) went zone against the Diplomats to try and combat the height, but Franklin & Marshall (1-2) shot well from the outside over the first two quarters to the tune of 7-for-14 from beyond the arc and 45 percent from the field. Emily Moran and Kenzie Bradley each hit a pair of treys for F&M in the first half.
The Blue Jays utilized its speed to get out in transition on the misses and after forcing eight turnovers. E-town had 15 points off turnovers in the first half as well as 26 points in the paint, mainly coming on the Jays' fastbreak baskets.
Down seven four minutes into the first, a turnover at the Franklin & Marshall end turned into a three-point play for
Veronica Christ at the other end. Despite the Diplomats' hot start, Elizabethtown stayed in the game on its transition play and free throw shooting.
The Blue Jays were aggressive in going to the basket and shot 19 first-half foul shots, making 16. Christ was a team-best 5-for-5 from the line while
Marissa Emlet was 3-for-3. Seven different players shot free throws for EC in the first half of play.
Lawson had 14 of her 27 in the first half, while Christ added 12 as the Jays trailed 46-45 at halftime.
Elizabethtown's first five buckets of the third quarter were all down low on layups before
Angie Hawkins drained a three from the right wing that got the Blue Jays within one, 59-58. E-town trailed by as many as six earlier in the quarter.
Emlet grabbed a defensive board and quickly got the ball out to Lawson on the break and the senior finished off the play with the easy two with 15 seconds remaining in the third. The teams went tied into the fourth, 63-63.
Mikayla Ruth powered up a layup after drawing contact to start the fourth and E-town was in front by three after Ruth knocked down the foul shot to complete the and-one play.
Jillian Nagy supplied a pair of fourth-quarter buckets off the bench that helped keep the Jays in front. The freshman's jumper with a little over five minutes to play broke a 74-74 tie and Elizabethtown never looked back from there.
The outside shooting for F&M cooled off in the second half as they only hit on three of their 14 shoots from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays continued to push the ball with great success. EC had another 26 points in the paint in the third and fourth quarters.
Up just two after a three by the Diplomats, E-town scored on three consecutive possessions on baskets by Emlet, Hawkins, and Christ while holding the hosts scoreless. With 1:04 left in the game, the Jays were ahead 85-77. Christ's jumper all but iced the game for Elizabethtown.
Lawson finished with 27 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the field. Christ had 18, Hawkins posted 12, and Ruth and Emlet ended with 11 apiece. The Blue Jays shot 22-for-27 (81.5 percent) at the foul line and 32-for-63 (50.8 percent) overall.
Elizabethtown will host Cabrini on Thursday, November 21, at 7 p.m.
