Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fast start leads women's basketball to win at Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team ran its record to 2-0 Wednesday night at Sorrentino Gym as the Blue Jays got out to a quick lead and maintained it until the final buzzer sounded. Veronica Christ led all scorers with a game-high 23 points.

Christ hit one of her three treys to start off the game and four of the five starters scored to put Elizabethtown out in front 9-0 over the first 4:30 of the game. Lebanon Valley (0-2) broke through on Morgan Bamberger's three-pointer with 5:17 left in the first quarter. E-town led 18-9 after Lydia Lawson's steal and fastbreak layup. Lawson made her season debut for the Jays.

Marissa Emlet knocked down a pair of foul shots early in the second quarter as the lead grew to double digits. Rachel Christman drained a three the next time down the court for the Blue Jays and it was a 23-11 led with over nine minutes left before the half. The lead was as many as 16 after Christ's jumper with 36 seconds remaining in the second.

E-town led the Dutchmen 34-20 at the break.

Angie Hawkins hit a jumper to make it an 18-point game with 7:29 to go in the third, the largest of the game for Elizabethtown, minutes after Christ's bucket had also made it an 18-point advantage. From there, Lebanon Valley began to chip away to get back into the game.

Kennedy Kuffa's layup with 23 ticks on the clock brought it down to 10 points by the end of the third quarter. That momentum continued into the fourth as LVC began on a 7-0 run to get within three points, 44-41, with 7:28 left in the game.

Out of an Elizabethtown timeout, Christ canned another three for the Jays to break the scoring drought and double the lead to six. The junior knocked down another jumper and then Mikayla Ruth's free throw made it a nine-point lead.

LVC was as close as six points with 1:24 left, but free throws from E-town in the latter stages were able to put the game out of reach as they went on to remain unbeaten.

Christ hit 9 of 19 shot attempts for a game-high 23 points in 30-plus minutes. Hawkins added eight, Emlet had six, and Ruth and Lawson each netted five points. Lawson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and recorded nine steals.

Elizabethtown will take part in the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament this coming weekend at Franklin & Marshall. The Blue Jays will open the weekend with William Smith on Saturday, November 16, at 1 p.m.
