HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- For the third consecutive year against Juniata,
Lydia Lawson recorded a hat trick for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team. The Blue Jays went on the road Saturday at Gibbel Stadium and got the 3-0 win to even their Landmark Conference record and move to 6-3-1 on the season.
Trinity Soto and
Christine Fox combined on the shutout.
Angela Carcella rose above and got her head on a ball off a corner, but goalie Cati Besch made the save for Juniata (2-6-2, 0-2-0 Landmark) in the ninth minute to keep the game scoreless.
Lawson notched her third consecutive season of 10 or more goals in the 12th minute, scoring her first of three in the first half in the 12th minute to give Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead.
Madison Burnham and Lawson each had shots saved by Besch, who was doing her best to keep the Eagles close in the opening 15 minutes.
As the Blue Jays continued to pressure in the offensive third, Lawson connected again on a goal.
Gabi Brown aided the senior in her second of the game and 11th of the season, which came in the 29th minute to give the Jays a 2-0 advantage. Carcella kept the ball inbounds along the end line, passed back to Brown, who stepped into a cross that went far post, perfectly placed onto the right boot of Lawson, who struck it into the left side of the goal.
A post saved another goal for E-town from going in off the boot of
Janelle Barna.
Sydney Detky had a scoring opportunity a few minutes later, but Besch was there for the stop.
Shortly before halftime, Lawson completed her hat trick with her 12th of the year in the 44th minute. E-town led 3-0 at the break.
While neither side could muster a goal in the second half, the Blue Jays did a solid job defensively of limiting the Eagles. Juniata was able to register only three shots in each half, and only two for the game were on target. Soto and Fox each made one save. Fox played the final 28:01 in relief of Soto as the duo recorded their third combined shutout of the season.
Elizabethtown outshot Juniata 25-6 and had nine corner kicks to zero for the Eagles.
The women's soccer team has the coming week off before traveling to Drew next Saturday, October 12, for a Landmark Conference contest with the Rangers at 4 p.m.
