Lawson, Carcella, Soto shine in Blue Jays' win at Penn State Berks

READING, Pa. -- Lydia Lawson and Angela Carcella each recorded a goal and an assist for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer while Trinity Soto made eight saves to earn her first career shutout as the Blue Jays blanked Penn State Berks 4-0. Janelle Barna and Kristin Wilkinson also scored for E-town.

Though Megan Jardine put the game's first shot attempt on goal in the fifth minute, it was Elizabethtown (5-3-1) that would get the game's first goal a few minutes later.

Carcella played a pass ahead and Lawson used her speed to latch onto the ball to put her in a one-on-one with the goalie. The senior was able to place a shot into the far corner for her ninth of the season to give E-town a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Leigh Ungerleider was close to making it 2-0 in the tenth minute, but her shot was saved by Leslie Estrada.

Barna made it 2-0 in the 28th minute as the Blue Jays had taken hold of the game. The Slatington, Pa. native had her initial shot saved by Estrada, but Barna pounced on the rebound of her own shot and scored her fourth of the season.

Penn State Berks (5-6) had two opportunities late in the first half to cut into the deficit, but Soto made a pair of saves to keep it 2-0 after 45 minutes.

Soto needed to be on alert early in the second half as Emily Clapper forced the freshman into a save in the 47th minute. A header from Karina Raykova in the 51st minute was on target, but Soto made one of her seven saves to keep the clean sheet alive.

As the defense continued to hold PSB at bay, the offense came through once again in the 64th minute. This time, it was Lawson providing the assist on Carcella's first goal of the season. Lawson crossed a ball into the box and Carcella's shot found its way inside the right post to make it 3-0.

Late in the contest, Kristin Wilkinson added her second of the season. Marissa Lapinsky sent in a cross from the endline that ended in a shot from Wilkinson that found the net to put the score at 4-0.

Soto made her eighth save of the game with 1:01 left in the regulation to preserve the shutout.

The Blue Jays will jump back into conference play with a matchup at Juniata on Saturday, October 5, at 4 p.m.
