Field hockey beats Moravian for third straight conference win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team continued to take care of business in conference play after shutting out Moravian on a rainy Wednesday night at John Makuvek Field. Lauren Scheib scored a pair of goals after halftime and Madeline Kachel earned her second shutout of the season as the Blue Jays improved to 3-1 in the Landmark.

Elizabethtown (5-8, 3-1 Landmark) held the Greyhounds without a shot in the first quarter while testing Moravian (3-11, 0-4 Landmark) goalie Ashley Kunsman several times in search of the first goal of the game. Kunsman made four stops in the opening quarter and ended up with seven in the game.

The Blue Jays had chances, but just couldn't find a way to beat Kunsman over the first 30 minutes.

Midway through the third, Scheib was able to do just that off a corner play for E-town. Chloe Smith launched a shot toward goal from out top and Scheib redirected it with her stick and into the cage for her team-leading fifth of the season and first of the night.

Smith and Scheib combined for the second goal of the night in the fourth quarter as well on the same kind of play. Olivia Beachley inserted the Jays' corner, Smith's shot was deflected, again, by Scheib into the cage before Kunsman could adjust to the play and gave Elizabethtown a 2-0 lead and the insurance goal they sought to put the contest away.

Kachel only needed to make one save in the game, which came later in the fourth quarter. She saved Emily Wells' scoring opportunity to preserve the shutout.

Scheib led the team with six shots while Anna Mostoller registered four. Smith and Emily Garvin each finished with two apiece.

The field hockey team travels to Scranton on Saturday, October 19, for a 1 p.m. Landmark Conference matchup with the Royals.
