ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Saturday's Landmark Conference matchup between the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Drew seemed much closer than it was judging by the final score. While the Blue Jays dominated play, it was
Bethany Gayman's first quarter goal that stood up over the final 53 minutes as the decider in the contest.
Madeline Kachel earned her first career shutout in the win for E-town.
It was the slow start for both teams as they combined for four shots in the opening 15 minutes, three from Elizabethtown (4-8, 2-1 Landmark). The Jays then took it to Drew (2-12, 0-3 Landmark) in the second and third quarters, piling up the shots and corners.
Kachel made her only save of the game in the first five minutes, stopping a shot from the Rangers' leading scorer, freshman Lauren Zultowski. From there, the Blue Jays kept their goalie clean the rest of the way.
Gayman got in close at 7:30 of the first and put a shot on goal. Joie Slossar made the pad save, but the rebound was there for Gayman, who stuck it into the cage for her first of the season to make it 1-0 for the Jays a few seconds after her initial shot was denied.
E-town had several chances early in the second.
Olivia Beachley,
Madison Kubik, and
Lauren Scheib each had opportunities saved by Slossar, who made 11 in the game to keep Drew within a goal. Slossar made one final save with two seconds left before halftime, coming off a Blue Jays' penalty corner.
Drew's best chance of the game came in the second as Trisha Dominick's shot rang off the inside of the post. The ball trickled back across the goal mouth, but no damage was done as no other Drew player was in the area for the rebound.
Elizabethtown continued to dominate the game out of halftime, registering another six shots and eight corners in the third. The Rangers were able to stymy EC's corner plays and limit the chances E-town had.
The Rangers earned their only corner of the game in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Jays did well not to allow a quality scoring chance as no shot came from it.
E-town kept the ball down at the other end of the field as the clock wound down to zero.
Gayman tied for a team-high with four shots and led Elizabethtown as all four shots were on goal.
Celene Desko and Kubik each finished with three shots for the Blue Jays.
The field hockey team will be on the road Wednesday night as the travel to Moravian for a 7 p.m. Landmark Conference matchup on October 16.
