Women's basketball puts Catholic away early in blowout win

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Lydia Lawson and Veronica Christ combined to nearly outscore Catholic on their own in the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's blowout win Wednesday night at Franny Murray Court. Christ had a team-high 18 points and Lawson added 17 for the Blue Jays in a 71-38 Landmark Conference victory on the road.

The final game of a tough three-game stretch that consisted of all road contests, Elizabethtown (13-6, 6-3 Landmark) left no doubt from the start. The Blue Jays scored at least 20 points in each of the first three quarters while holding Catholic (12-8, 4-5 Landmark) to single digits and led by as many as 40 points in the third.

The Cardinals led 17 seconds into the game on Sydney Poindexter's game-opening bucket, a layup. Christ and Lawson helped get E-town level and then take the lead shortly thereafter. The Jays caused 23 turnovers and finished the game with 30 points off turnovers.

It was a four-point game late in the first quarter when Christ and Mikayla Ruth hit consecutive threes to turn it into a double-digit lead for Elizabethtown. Lawson hit a pair of foul shots, two of her game-high 11 made free throws, to finish out the quarter that resulted in a 20-8 lead for EC.

Christ recorded nine straight points for the Blue Jays at one point in the second quarter as the lead grew to 22, 37-15, with 3:15 left before halftime. Christ had all of her 18 by the half. Lawson, Angie Hawkins, and Clare Marchese were the leading scorers for the Jays in the second half, but by that time, the game was well out of reach.

Up 40 at the start of the fourth, Marchese and Lily Doerschuk recorded the nine fourth-quarter points for Elizabethtown. Marchese hit a pair of treys and Doerschuk was fouled on a three-point attempt and sank all three of her foul shots for her first collegiate points.

Hawkins had 11 points off the bench as the Blue Jays routed Catholic, 71-38. E-town held reigning Athlete of the Week Luca Mamula to just five points. Cristin George had a team-high eight points as no Cardinal player reached double figures. EC held CATHU to 29 percent shooting for the game (14-for-48).

Elizabethtown will host Susquehanna on Saturday, February 2, at 2 p.m.
