SCRANTON, Pa. -- There was no buzzer beater at the John Longer Center on Saturday as Scranton got back at the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team after
Connor Moffatt's game-winner earlier this month. The Royals pulled away in the second half and shot nearly 55 percent in the game in a 77-56 win over the Blue Jays.
Bryce Greene and Moffatt were both in double figures for E-town.
Elizabethtown (9-9, 4-4 Landmark) and Scranton (16-3, 5-3 Landmark) traded baskets through the first five and a half minutes. Neither side could get a stop until Greene's layup made it 10-9 and he came down the next possession and drained a three for the first consecutive scores of the game.
It was a one-possession affair up until the 3:33 mark of the first half as Scranton's Kyle DeVerna made it a five-point lead with two free throws. This came after back-to-back three pointers by
Brandon Berry and Greene.
Logan Bailey put the Royals up by seven, their largest lead, with 2:33 to go in the half, but Moffatt responded a minute later with two of his 10 points.
Ethan DuBois had the final points of the half on a jumper with 1:02 remaining. Scranton took a 34-29 lead into the locker room.
The Blue Jays clung on to the single-digit deficit as Scranton tried to pull away. Ahead by 10,
Matt Thomas and
Ethan DuBois got E-town within six, but it was all the closer they would get. The Royals continued to flirt with the double-digit advantage. Jackson Danzig put Scranton up by 11, but
Michael Pastore answered with two free throws. Jack Brockett's foul shots put it back to 11. Moffatt responded with a three and it was back down to eight with 10:03 left in the game.
Out of a timeout called after Moffatt's make, the Royals set out on a 17-0 run to take full control of the Landmark Conference matchup. Berry's freebies with 4:46 left stopped the run, but by that point, it was a 23-point lead for Scranton, 73-50.
Jake DuBois and
Jalil Pines-Elliott had the final six points for Elizabethtown, all on shots from the inside.
Greene had 14 points to lead E-town. Moffatt added 10 and 9 rebounds. Matthew Mancuso led four in double figures for Scranton with 15 points.
Elizabethtown will host Catholic on Wednesday, January 30, at 7 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium.
