CHESTER, Pa. -- In the first-ever match for the Elizabethtown College men's volleyball program, the Blue Jays came away from Widener with the 3-0 sweep of the Pride.
Nick Baxter led with 12 kills and 7 digs and
Tim Zieber had 22 assists for E-town, who had set victories of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-16.
Down 1-0 in the first set,
Ethan Maurer recorded the first point in program history with a kill on Zieber's first assist of the night. The teams went back-and-forth over the next four points until Elizabethtown (1-0) went on a quick spurt of three straight points to capture their first lead of the set at 5-4. A block by
Steven Schreffler provided the point for the Jays.
Widener (0-1) grabbed the lead back and went up 9-7, but E-town didn't allow them to get away. Three straight by the Jays and six of the next seven points went to the Blue and Gray as they now led 13-10. Unforced errors by the Pride later in the set cost the hosts valuable points after the set was in a 15-15 deadlock. Once the Blue Jays had the 19-15 lead, Widener couldn't recover.
Nick Spangler's ace ended the first set 25-20.
The Pride came right back at Elizabethtown in the second set and led 7-5 after 12 points. Another run by the Jays put EC back in front 10-7 as Baxter and Schreffler added kills to fuel the run and force Widener into a timeout. Maurer's kill and a ball handling error on the Pride ended the second set with an eight-point set victory for Elizabethtown and one closer to securing the program's first-ever win.
Leading for much of the third set,
Ryan Fisher's kill put E-town one away from the sweep. An attacking error by Widener ended the match 25-16 and the Blue Jays had claimed their first-ever win.
Mark Hall contributed four block assists and
Joey Nelson had six digs for the Jays in the win.
Elizabethtown is at Wilkes on Saturday, January 26, for a tri-match with the Colonels and Keuka College. The Blue Jays play host Wilkes at 11 a.m. before battling Keuka at 1 p.m.
