ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- There was no answer for
Angie Hawkins off the bench for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team in Monday's 55-40 win over Drew at Thompson Gymnasium. Hawkins went off for a game-high 25 points and the Blue Jays' defense was stout against the Rangers.
Lydia Lawson added 11 points for E-town in the win.
Julia Ramos lobbed in a pass to Erin Frederick on the game's opening possession for Drew (10-6, 3-3 Landmark) and the sophomore went up for the easy bucket. From there, Elizabethtown (11-5, 4-2 Landmark) tightened up and locked down the Rangers. Drew shot 3-for-18 in the first quarter and less than 21 percent for the first half.
Mikayla Ruth hit from deep range and Lawson made two straight shots as the Blue Jays went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-2 lead a little than halfway through the first quarter. E-town held the Rangers to single-digit points in each of the first three quarters.
Hawkins helped the Jays put an early stranglehold on the game in the second quarter. Hawkins started off the second with a three-pointer and a layup after grabbing an offensive rebound and going back up for the deuce. She had the first seven points of the second period for E-town and nine of the first 11 as they went ahead 23-11.
The freshman was a tough matchup for Drew, who couldn't find the right answer defensively for Hawkins' toughness and explosiveness. Hawkins outscored Drew on her own in the second quarter, 11-8, and had 14 points at the half. Elizabethtown led 31-17 at the break.
The double-digit lead for the Blue Jays never dipped below ten in the second half, though Drew got within 11 after Lisa Cappiello's three with 6:50 left in the third. Who else other than Hawkins to get the lead to the biggest of the quarter, 20 points, after the West York grad went hard to the rim, took the contact, and made the shot. She also sank the free throw to give E-town a 42-22 lead with 3:34 remaining in the third quarter.
Lawson picked one of her team-high three steals midway through the fourth and was joined by Hawkins on the fast break opportunity. Lawson drew the defender in as she closed in on the basket. The junior guard smartly went with a behind-the-back pass to Hawkins, who caught the ball in stride for the easy left-handed layup.
The Elizabethtown defense, meanwhile, did a number on shutting down one of Drew's top shooters, Hailey Stine. The Rangers' starting guard did not score a single point all game as the Blue Jays focused on stopping the long-range threat Stine presented. Stine and Ramos started a combined 0-for-16 from the floor, a key to helping E-town get out in front.
Hawkins' 25 points came on 9-for-13 shooting, 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, and five makes at the foul line. Frederick had team highs of 13 points and 8 rebounds for Drew.
The Blue Jays are on the road at Juniata this Wednesday, January 23, at 7 p.m.
