Women's soccer suffers first setback of season in loss to Gettysburg

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The rainy weather forced the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team back to Weaver Fields on Saturday night to face Gettysburg in non-conference action. The result did not end up as it did the first game the Blue Jays played on the turf. The Bullets scored three times in the second half and won 3-0.

Gettysburg (2-1-1) put two shots on goal in the first half at Christine Fox, but the sophomore goalie made easy saves. The Elizabethtown (2-1) defense made it tough for the Bullets to find space in and around the box, blocking several shots and forcing off balance attempts of the ones that reached the net.

The Bullets controlled much of the first half and did not allow E-town to register a shot through 45 minutes. Gettysburg's pressure on the Jays' defenders and midfielders prevented any counters and limited the spacing between the boxes for EC to work.

Gettysburg came out of halftime looking to score early on and they did. Molly O'Shea had a loose ball come to her just outside the box. She looped a high arcing shot toward goal that found the roof of the net above the goalie's outstretched hands to give the Bullets the lead in the 50th minute.

The persistent work of Gettysburg paid off in the 62nd minute as they doubled the lead to 2-0. O'Shea found Emma Bedell for her first of the season. Lauren Miesemer latched on to Erika Muskus' cross in the 66th minute to put Elizabethtown in a big hole with a little over 20 minutes to play.

Leigh Ungerleider had the Blue Jays' scoring opportunity of the game in the 86th minute. The freshman was able to find some space on the dribble on the left side of the box. Her shot, uncontested, was caught in the gloves of Madelyn Cunningham, who had subbed on with 9:55 left in the game to replace starter Kerry Sammon for GC.

Fox made four saves in the game for E-town.

Elizabethtown travels to face Ursinus on Wednesday, September 12, at 7:30 p.m.
