Blue Jays tie Bears in double overtime

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- A year to the day after the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team walked off with a 2-1 overtime win against Ursinus at Ira R. Herr Field, the teams needed extra time once more Wednesday night. The Blue Jays threatened in each overtime period, but the Bears held them from scoring and the teams drew 1-1.

It was a slow start as the weather made playing conditions slightly tougher. Elizabethtown (2-1-1) produced a few corners in the opening 15 minutes, but couldn't turn them into goals. Angela Carcella had the first shot on goal for the Jays, but her shot was stopped by Sabrina Doherty in the 31st minute.

Ursinus (2-1-2) sub Kelly Gardus put the Bears ahead 1-0 in the 39th minute, five minutes after taking the field for the first time in the game. Carcella tried to equalize for the Jays, but her scoring chance was snubbed by Doherty for a second time on the night.

The Bears led 1-0 at the half, though E-town led 5-3 in shots and 4-0 in corners.

Elizabethtown began to pick up its play in the second half as they did not allow Ursinus a shot on goal in the second half. E-town pushed for the game-tying goal and found it off the boot of Carcella. Alli Lasky's free kick came in to the head of Lydia Lawson. Her redirected header at goal came off the left post and the freshman continued her run toward goal and was there to put it in for her first career goal to knot up the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute.

In the first overtime, Rachel Coleman could have ended things right away in the 93rd minute, but Christine Fox saved the shot, her only stop of the opening overtime session. Lawson and Alli Lasky had shots saved by Doherty as the teams exchanged scoring chances.

With no goals in the first OT, a second was needed to try and decide a winner. The Jays were on the front foot for the next 10 minutes, but couldn't come up with the game-winner. E-town had a few looks, including Katrina Morales' shot in the 103rd minute, but Doherty was there once again to keep things level.

Elizabethtown didn't allow any shots to Ursinus in the second overtime and finished with a decisive 17-10 advantage in shots on the night.

Fox only needed to make two saves during the game, while Doherty ended her night with six.

The Blue Jays are at Stevenson on Saturday, September 15, at 1 p.m.
