Blue Jays sweep NYU for first win, fall to #16 Johns Hopkins

YORK, Pa. -- Elizabethtown split a pair of matches at the York College Spartan Invitational Friday. The Blue Jays were swept by 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 3-0, in the opener but responded with a 3-0 sweep of New York U. for their first win of the season.

25-15, 25-13, 25-21

Johns Hopkins were the best of the Blue Jays this time, with the nation's 16th-ranked team pulling out commanding victories in the first and second sets before holding off Elizabethtown 25-21 in the third to cap the sweep.

Louisa Kishton and Simone Bliss each went into double figures in kills for Hopkins (2-0), which also played a strong defensive game.

Elizabethtown (0-5), facing its third nationally-ranked opponent in five matches to start the year, could never get anything going offensively. Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro and Sarah Schneider each finished with double-figure digs, but no Blue Jay accounted for 10 kills or more.

ELIZABETHTOWN 3, NEW YORK U. 0

Two of the three sets against NYU came down to the wire in the nightcap, but Elizabethtown stood tall and emerged with victories in each to pick up its first win of the season.

Sarah Schneider totaled a match-high 10 kills, Rileigh Hudock recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 31 assists and 11 digs, and Marissa Krinock and Katie Kennedy were excellent on the serve, combining for nine aces.

Krinock, playing minutes from home, had an outstanding all-around match with nine kills, five aces, three blocks and a .389 hitting percentage.

Freshman Shelly Yohe connected for seven kills without an error to hit a team-best .467 against the Violets (3-2).

NYU nearly forced a fourth set, leading 20-17 in the third. Krinock responded with two kills and assisted on a block with Yohe. Elizabeth Zeiber added an ace and a kill, and Hudock had an ace as the Jays ended the match on an 8-2 run to squeak out the set, 25-23.
