LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team enjoyed their highest scoring output of the season and moved to 34-0 all-time against Juniata with a 4-0 win over the Eagles on Saturday at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex.
JD Haaf,
Jorge Sanchiz,
Connor Rathsam, and
Brendan Burke each scored for the Blue Jays.
Mitchell Gochnauer nearly opened the scoring up for Elizabethtown (2-4-3, 1-0-1 Landmark) in the ninth minute. The senior centerback, a target on set pieces, rose above the rest of the crowd in the box just outside the six and put his thundering header on frame, literally, as it boomed off the crossbar and stayed out of the net.
E-town controlled much of the ball and the play in the first half, and they would rewarded with a pair of goals in 59 seconds.
Gilbert Waso possessed the ball down on the endline near the Juniata (4-5-1, 0-2 Landmark) goal with a defender on this back. The forward sent a diagonal ball toward the PK spot as Haaf made his run into the box and one-timed it into the goal, his second of the season and Waso's first of two assists.
Brian Gately made his first save of the game on Jacob Grove's header 22 seconds after Haaf's goal. Back at the other end, Haaf slipped a pass into Sanchiz's path toward goal. Sanchiz avoided the oncoming goalie, touching the ball past him and stayed on his feet to place the ball into the left netting to make it 2-0, his first career goal for the Jays.
Gately made a pair of saves later on in the half and E-town outshot Juniata 11-5 and took their 2-0 lead into the break.
Elizabethtown clamped down defensively and did not allow the Eagles a single shot in the second half while registering seven of their own.
Waso's second assist and team-leading fifth of the year came in the 67th minute as he flicked on the ball to Rathsam, who hit it first time and watched as it went off the inside of the far post and across the line for his second of the season to make it 3-0.
Brendan Burke added his first of the year and second of his career in the 75th minute.
Cameron Dorr lifted a cross from the far left sideline that was just high enough to get over Burke's defender. The junior was able to control the ball and on the bounce, lashed a shot back toward the left side that hit the twine to up the score to 4-0.
Andrew McGowan came in to play the final 12:03 in goal and combined with Gately for the shutout. E-town finished with an 18-5 advantage in shots.
The Blue Jays will have a week off as they prepare for defending Landmark champion Drew next Saturday, October 6, at 1 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field.
