ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown was rewarded for a strong effort, Saturday, when freshman
Garrett Winchilla scored his third goal of the season in the 82nd minute to push the Blue Jays past Drew, 1-0, in a Landmark Conference game at Ira R. Herr Field.
Winchilla ran onto a pass from
Gilbert Waso and knocked a shot off the left glove of Rangers' goalkeeper Jason Adamo and in from just inside the 18 for the game's only goal.
The victory was a well-deserved result for the Blue and Gray (3-4-3, 2-0-1 Landmark), which came within inches of scoring three times.
Waso nearly put the Blue Jays on the board in the 19th minute, but Drew (8-3, 2-1) defender Tyler Kwaak stepped in front of the senior's shot at the right post, redirecting it out of bounds for a corner.
A little over 13 minutes into the second half,
Cameron Dorr found himself alone on the left side of the 6, but his shot attempt was turned aside by Rangers' midfielder Anthony McMyne.
E-town dictated possession throughout the afternoon. The Blue Jays held a decisive 16-7 advantage in shots. The defense limited Drew to its lowest shot total of the season.
Waso, who assisted on Winchilla's game-winning goal, moved within five points of 100 in his illustrious Blue Jay career. He was credited with a game-high five shots (three on goal).
Brian Gately made two saves in each half to register his fourth shutout of the season. The Lancaster County native hasn't allowed a goal in three straight games and extended his season-long scoreless streak to 324:42.
Nate Race was the lone Ranger with multiple shots in Saturday's matchup, taking three, including two on goal that were both stopped by Gately.
Elizabethtown is back at home on Wednesday night to face Penn State Berks at 7 p.m.
