ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --
Gilbert Waso had two goals and two assists to become the 12th player in Elizabethtown College men's soccer history to score 100 career points in a 5-1 runaway victory for the Blue Jays over Penn State Berks Wednesday evening.
Elizabethtown brought pressure from the opening whistle and was on the verge of breaking through with the game's first goal during the opening 20 minutes. Waso twice had shots stopped by Berks keeper Trent Johnson and
Will Connolly missed just high on an attempt in the 19th minute.
The Blue Jays (4-4-3) were finally rewared in the 31st minute when a pass from Waso deflected off Johnson and right to freshman
Jorge Sanchiz who easily tapped it into an open net.
The goals kept coming. E-town scored four in less than 37 minutes between the end of the first half and start of the second to instill their dominance.
JD Haaf doubled the Jays' lead in the 37th minute with a perfectly placed free kick from 20 yards out.
Just over 16 minutes into the second half, Waso ran onto a pass from
Alex Musgnug and buried it for his second goal of the season. Quick passing from Waso and
Miguel Ikomo set up
Massimo Mazzella's first career goal in the 68th minute to make it 4-0.
Sitting on 99 career points, Waso was taken down in the box with 10 minutes left. He stepped up and converted the ensuing penalty kick to reach 100 career points in style.
Waso is the first Blue Jay to eclipse the century mark in career points since Chris Helsel in 1998. The senior forward is currently tied with Helsel for 11th-place on the program's all-time scoring list (101 points) and moved into sole possession of ninth on the program's career goals list with his 38th.
Penn State Berks avoided the shutout with a goal by Carter Lam in the 85th minute.
Elizabethtown dominated possession, outshooting the Nittany Lions (4-8-1) 23-6 and collecting eight corners to zero for Berks.
Senior
Andrew McGowan relieved starting keeper
Brian Gately after 30 minutes and made two saves for his first career win on Senior Night. McGowan and Gately were among eight seniors recognized in a pregame ceremony along with
Tyler Colasanto,
Cameron Dorr,
Mitchell Gochnauer, Musgnug,
Danny Sullivan and Waso.
The Blue Jays look to remain unbeaten in Landmark Conference play when they travel to Scranton Saturday at 1 p.m.
