LANCASTER, Pa. -- For the second consecutive meeting,
Lydia Lawson put in three against Juniata and the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak in a 4-0 win over the Eagles on Saturday at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex.
Leigh Ungerleider recorded her first career goal in the win and
Christine Fox posted her second shutout of the season.
Elizabethtown (3-4-2, 1-1 Landmark) wasn't having an issue getting shots off in the first half against Juniata (3-6, 0-2 Landmark). The only trouble through the first half was finding the back of the net.
Kelli Olsson had a go at goal in the fourth minute and did not miss by much as the shot went just over the crossbar. A minute and 23 seconds later,
Shannon Conlon was inches away from her third goal of the season, but the post denied the senior striker the goal. Soon after, Lawson's shot on goal was saved by Kristin Racis. Lawson had a game-high eight shots for the Blue Jays.
Late in the half, Olsson stood over a free kick from about 30 yards out. The freshman laced another ball toward the goal and this time hit the crossbar.
Samantha Wanamaker,
Shannon Jalbert, and Lawson each had shots saved by Racis in the final five minutes of the half. Despite finished with a 13-0 advantage in shots, the game was scoreless at the half.
E-town's persistence paid off, finally, in the 52nd minute. The midfield, as it had done all game, was winning the 50-50 balls in the middle third.
Emily Finnessy had the ball going up the left side and played it up to Lawson, who sped into the box and tucked a shot under the diving keeper and into the net for the first goal of the game, her seventh of the season and first of three in the game.
Seven minutes later,
Alli Lasky lifted a set piece from straight on into the box. Lawson timed it perfectly and, with her back to the goal, flicked the ball on frame. Caught unprepared for the quick flick, the goalie was too late to get her hands up to keep the ball out of the goal. Lawson had her second of the afternoon and Lasky had her third assist of the year.
Less than minutes after her second goal, Lawson completed her hat trick on a one-two give-and-go with Olsson. The freshman right back had gotten up and into the attack as E-town continued to press for a third. Lawson had the ball cutting toward the right sideline and dished off to Olsson. She played the ball right back into the box and a streaking Lawson ran onto it and one-touched it in for her third and Olsson's first career point.
Ungerleider's first career goal came in the 75th minute, about 12 minutes after subbing on for Lawson. With the same scoring precision as the player she subbed in for, Ungerleider hit a beauty from out near the top of the box and soared into the upper right corner of the net. Conlon had squared the ball to the freshman, who struck it cleanly and left the keeper no chance.
Fox needed to make just two saves, both in the second half, for her second shutout of the year. Racis had 13 saves for Juniata. Defensively, Elizabethown held the Eagles 16 shots below their season average (20.3).
Elizabethtown will host Penn State Berks for their Pink Game on Tuesday, October 2, at 7 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field.
