Penn State Berks blanks Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Penn State Berks got a pair of second-half goals after a scoreless first half and blanked the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team Tuesday night in non-conference action at Ira R. Herr Field. Julia Green and Caitlin Golden scored 11 minutes apart to lift the Lions over the Blue Jays, 2-0.

Madison Burnham had Elizabethtown's (3-5-2) first attempt on goal in the game in the 23rd minute. Her shot was saved by Bristol Pizzuto, one of four saves in the game for the Penn State Berks (7-3-1) starting keeper.

Christine Fox had to be alert, and she was, in the 24th minute as Alexa Lopez's in-swinging corner kick found the head of Golden near the back post. Golden's header skimmed off the grass toward goal and Fox got her hands up in time to keep it out and not allow a rebound opportunity for the Lions.

Seven minutes later, Adara Enrique gave it a go from about 30 yards out and smashed a long shot into the crossbar. Golden's follow-up chance sailed high and the game remained 0-0.

E-town had a few shots early on in the second half as they began to press Berks up the field with possession. Lawson had a pair of shots saved by Pizzuto. Shannon Conlon got her head on a Kristin Wilkinson corner in the 61st minute, but the chance went right of goal.

Green got Penn State Berks on the board in the 75th minute. The ball came across to Green, who had her initial shot saved by Green. She was able to follow up her shot and stick in the rebound for her third goal of the season.

Golden helped put the game away in the 86th minute when her turn-around shot from the left side of the box deflected off a defender's foot and into the net, making it 2-0.

Penn State Berks finished with a 20-10 edge in shots and 9-4 in shots on goal. Pizzuto had four saves for the Lions while Fox made seven for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown hosts Drew on Saturday, October 6, at 4 p.m. in Landmark Conference showdown.
