Two goals from Lawson enough for women's soccer to beat Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Lydia Lawson struck 1:06 into Saturday's Landmark Conference contest with Drew at Ira R. Herr Field to get the ball rolling for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team. Lawson added a second in the opening half and Christine Fox made four saves for the Blue Jays as they held off Drew, 2-1.

Lawson's tenth goal of the season came off some nice one-two passing by Elizabethtown (4-5-2, 2-1 Landmark). Alli Lasky passed up to Shannon Conlon and the senior went on into the box. Conlon touched the ball on to Lawson, who ran onto the pass and boomed it into the net for the game's opening goal just 1:06 in.

A little over 11 minutes later, Lawson was in on goal once again, but her initial shot was saved by Drew (5-5-2, 0-2-1 Landmark) goalie Madison Dudziec. The rebound bounced out to Madison Burnham, who played the ball over to Conlon and the senior fed it to Lawson for her second of the game to make it 2-0 in favor of E-town at the 12:25 mark.

The Rangers did not go away and worked until they were able to cut the lead in half in the 32nd minute. Sarah Racine played in a quick corner to Leah Dentale, who was able to spin off the oncoming defending with the ball and send a left-footed cross into the box from the left side. Alex Gilgorri met the ball with her head and sent it into the left corner for the goal, her fourth.

Lawson came close to a hat trick as the first half was drawing to an end when she hit the post with 14 seconds left. The game went to halftime 2-1.

Drew outshot the Blue Jays in the second half, 9-6, but the four saves that Fox had to make did not test the sophomore keeper.

Burnham had a quality chance on a counter in the 75th minute, but from a tighter angle, Dudziec was able to push her shot over the bar for a resulting corner kick. Lawson nearly put the game out of reach with 7:30 left in the game, but her shot found the crossbar.

E-town didn't allow a shot over the final 14 minutes of the game and held on for the 2-1 win.

Elizabethtown travels to Bethlehem, Pa. for a pivotal Landmark Conference showdown with Moravian on Wednesday, October 10, at 7 p.m.
