Women's soccer can't overcome first-half deficit in loss at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Moravian scored goals seven and a half minutes apart in the first half and it was enough as the Greyhounds held on to beat the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team Wednesday night 2-1 in Landmark Conference action at John Makuhvek Field. Janelle Barna had the goal for the Blue Jays.

By a look at the box score alone, it was an even game. Both teams registered 10 shots and each side had five corners each. Moravian (7-3-1, 2-2 Landmark) held a slight edge in shots on goal, 6-4.

Known for their goals off set pieces, the Greyhounds had an attempt blocked on their first corner kick of the game less than five minutes into Wednesday night's affair. Sara Cassel's shot was blocked. Their first shot on goal, though, made its way into the back of the net. Gabby Stelzmiller set up Val Monaco for her second goal of the season in the 25th minute.

Elizabethtown (4-6-2, 2-2 Landmark) had a chance to tie it up in the 28th minute, but an opportunity by Alli Lasky was kept out of the net by a defender and Moravian maintained their 1-0 lead.

Oonagh Breen latched on to a rebound in the 32nd minute for the Greyhounds and gave the hosts a 2-0 lead and they took that into halftime.

The Blue Jays got a goal back, but it was too little, too late after being stuck in the 2-0 hole. Lydia Lawson dribbled along the top of the box toward the right side and passed off to Madison Burnham. The junior one-touched a pass back to where the ball had come from and Lawson let the ball roll through her legs and into the path of an oncoming Barna. Barna, who scored last year's game-winner at home against Moravian, struck the ball with the inside of her right foot and curled it into the left side of the goal in the 90th minute. With only 18 seconds on the clock, E-town had little time and couldn't muster a second goal as Moravian ran out the clock.

Christine Fox made four saves in the game for Elizabethtown. Siobhan O'Sullivan had two saves for the Greyhounds.

The road doesn't get easier for the Jays as they had to Scranton for an important Landmark clash on Saturday, October 13, at 4 p.m.
