Women's soccer sees win streak over York (Pa.) snapped by Spartans

YORK, Pa. -- Georgia Gillcrist scored 25 seconds into the second half for York (Pa.) as the Spartans hung on for a 2-1 win over the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team to snap a four-game winless streak against the Blue Jays. Lydia Lawson had the goal for E-town.

Though York (Pa.) (4-5) had the better of play from the opening whistle, it was Elizabethtown (2-4-2) that struck for the game's first goal. Katrina Morales lashed in a shot from outside the box that the keeper couldn't handle cleanly. The save was made, but the rebound bounced to Madison Burnham, who headed it back toward goal and Lawson ran onto it and one-timed it into the net for her sixth goal of the season. The junior's goal came in the 15th minute.

The Blue Jays' goal seemed to wake up the Spartans, who pushed into the attacking third looking for one of their own. Ryan Hussey would deliver it in the 30th minute, knocking home a loose ball in the box, right in front of the net. Hussey's fifth of the season tied the game up 1-1.

Shannon Jalbert let a shot go in the 40th minute, but Sydney Kahn saved the freshman's scoring chance to keep it level. Alyssa Rankin tried to give York the lead as time ran out, but her shot was high and the teams went into the half still knotted up at 1-1.

Right out of halftime, Natalie McCarthy played a through ball up to Gillcrist, who was able to split the defense and get in on goal. She chipped her shot past the diving keeper and into the net, her second of the year, to give YCP the 2-1 lead early into the second half.

E-town didn't roll over, and instead, came back at York over the final 30 minutes and had several opportunities to draw even. Lawson and Burnham each had shots that needed saved by Kahn between the 60th and 70th minutes. Lawson got her head to the ball in the 77th minute, but Kahn denied the junior her second of the game.

Christine Fox stopped Emily Munkittrick's shot in the 87th minute to leave Elizabethtown a chance to tie it up. With the time under 15 seconds, the Jays had the ball on a counter and running at the defense. Lawson went at her defender, cut to her right and from 25 yards out with rain coming down, sent a bending ball about knee-high toward the Spartans' goal. The ball short hopped at the net, but Kahn was able to handle it enough to keep it out of the goal and secure the win for YCP.

Kahn finished with six saves for York while Fox made three for Elizabethtown.
