ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown tied a season-high with nine blocks and was solid defensively all evening in a 3-0 win over Neumann on Tuesday at Thompson Gymnasium.
Marisa Krinock supplied four blocks, while
Mackenzie Garner and
Sarah Schneider (team-high two solos) each had three for a Blue Jay team that snapped a four-match slide.
Head coach
Alex Hinsey needed the strong defensive performance from his team on a sluggish night from the offense. Elizabethtown (9-10) swept the Knights despite their second-lowest kill total (25) and second lowest hitting percentage (.035) of the season.
Neumann (8-8) had its own difficulties attacking, finishing with a negative hitting percentage of -.026.
The Blue Jays came up with 10 kills in the opening set, including four from Krinock. The Knights, meanwhile, committed seven attacking errors and four serving errors as Elizabethtown cruised to a 25-16 set victory.
The hosts had just five kills against six errors in the second, but registered 15 digs and five aces --two from
Jenna Harne-- to hold off the Knights, 25-20. Neumann saw its attack dip to a match-low -.083 in the set.
When Garner put down her team-high eighth kill of the night in the third to give the Jays a 24-21 lead, a sweep seemed imminent. Three unforced errors by E-town allowed Neumann to tie the set, but the Blue and Gray righted the ship just in time. A Knights' attacking error and a kill from freshman
Shelly Yohe wrapped up the set (26-24) and the match.
Schneider's 13 digs and
Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro's 12 were bests among the Blue Jays.
Rileigh Hudock added nine to go along with nine assists and a match-high three aces.
Offensively, Krinock had six kills and Yohe four behind Garner.
Neumann was led by Melanie Malseed's 16 digs and nine kills. Hayley Glah also provided 16 digs and Ariana Pena had six kills and three blocks.
Elizabethtown opens Landmark Conference play this coming Saturday at Scranton. The Jays will first take on the host Royals at noon, followed by Goucher at 2:30 p.m.
