Men's soccer plays Susquehanna to scoreless draw in Landmark opener

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Brian Gately made three saves for his third shutout of the season and the Elizabethtown men's soccer team tied Susquehanna, 0-0, in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

Susquehanna attempted seven shots in the first half, but only one of those, an Alex Graul bid in the 19th minute, made its way to Gately.

The Blue Jays (1-4-3, 0-0-1 Landmark) countered with five shots in the half, including two on goal in the final 10 minutes of the period. River Hawks' keeper Matt Ellingworth was able to stop a header from Elijah Visser in the 40th minute and a Cameron Sheva header in the 43rd to keep the game scoreless.

Maxfield Reed hit the crossbar with Susquehanna's (1-5-2, 0-0-1 Landmark) first shot of the second half, but it was as close as either team came to breaking through.

Both keepers were tasked with one save in the second. Gilbert Waso was denied in the 1st minute for the Blue and Gray, and Graul was again stopped by Gately in the 67th.

Elizabethtown's fourth overtime game of the season would yield little in the first 10 minute session. Travis Wilson had a chance turned aside by Ellingworth with less than 30 seconds left, but it was the last shot the Jays put on goal.

Gately made an early save on Noah Carles in double overtime. Susquehanna tried twice more, but Eric Dempsey's shot in the 105th minute was wide and one from Kyle Trainor was blocked less than a minute later.

Susquehanna edged the Jays in shots, 14-11, and saves, 4-3. The River Hawks also had nine corner kicks to E-town's four.

Saturday's result was just the fourth in 60 games against Susquehanna that didn't end in victory for Elizabethtown. The Blue Jays are 56-1-3 against the River Hawks since 1960.

E-town hits the road to face arch-rival and nationally-ranked No. 1 Messiah in the Marshmallow Bowl on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
