ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Alvernia scored late in the first half, but a stunning effort off the foot of
Garrett Winchilla helped the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team get level in the second half in what turned out to be a 1-1 draw with the Golden Wolves on Kicks for Cancer night at Ira R. Herr Field. It was Winchilla's second goal of the season.
JD Haaf sent a laser off the left post in the 30th minute, the best scoring chance of the first half for Elizabethtown (1-4-2).
Gilbert Waso had a shot stopped earlier in the half by Alvernia (2-4-2) keeper Luca Grippi. Haaf's shot had the goalie beaten, but the post denied the junior and the scoreless tie went on.
The team's each had three shots in the first half, but it was the Golden Wolves that found the twine. Damien Jennings flicked a pass to Matt Lee in the box as bodies scrambled trying to either clear the ball away or sent it in on net. Jennings' flick got to Lee, who scored his first goal of the year with 1:51 left before the half. AU led by a goal at the break.
Elizabethtown ratcheted up the offensive pressure with 16 shots in the second half to Alvernia's one. Though the Jays' first six shots didn't end up on frame, Haaf again was inches away from pulling E-town even. His rocket in the 74th minute struck the right post this time and bounced away from goal.
Winchilla left no doubt on his strike from outside the box in the 81st minute. The freshman struck the ball that sailed directly into the upper left corner of the goal, his second of the year, to equalize for the Blue Jays.
Grippi kept another shot by off out of the net and overtime was needed to try and decide a winner. Winchilla had another chance in the first overtime period, but Grippi made the save. Neither side could put a shot on target in the second overtime and Wednesday night's clash ended in a 1-1 tie.
Brian Gately made one save in his 110 minutes of action while Grippi had four for Alvernia.
The Blue Jays play at Susquehanna on Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m.
