ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team completed a perfect weekend by sweeping Penn State Harrisburg, 9-0, at the Alumni Courts on Sunday afternoon.
Lenea Riehl and
Kailey Caroland put the Blue Jays in front early with an 8-2 victory at first doubles against the Nittany Lions' Sydney Nye and Makiya Binion.
Elizabethtown also cruised at second doubles, where
Meghan Chemidlin and
Amber Burd were 8-1 winners over Harrisburg's Courney Bennett and Elysse Mellott. Freshman
Madelyn Binder teamed with
Laura Gribble for an 8-6 win at third doubles.
Singles wins by Chemidlin and Burd secured the desired result for the Blue Jays (2-0). Chemidlin didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Claire Hackenberg at third singles. The senior moved past 80 career combined wins (47 singles, 34 doubles) with a two-win day.
Burd hit 50 career wins (29 singles, 21 doubles) with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Mellott in the fourth singles match.
No. 2 Caroland (6-4, 6-0 over Maria Torre) and No. 6 Gribble (6-3, 6-4 over Soorya Chitibabu) were also straight set winners for Elizabethtown.
No. 1 Riehl and No. 5 Binder had to go to super tiebreakers, but each prevailed. Riehl downed Nye 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 and Binder grabbed her first career singles win 6-4, 2-6, 12-10.
