Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Waso, Rathsam lead men's soccer to first win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team was finally able to play a full 90 minutes on its home field at Ira R. Herr Field on Saturday against visiting Lebanon Valley. The Blue Jays broke into the win column in a big way with a 3-0 shutout of the Dutchmen led by Gilbert Waso and Connor Rathsam.

Two of the first three shots of the game found the netting behind the Lebanon Valley (3-2) defense. First, Waso picked the pocket of a defender in his own defensive third, dribbled into the box and cut back left and finished right for his first goal of the season just 43 seconds into the non-conference matchup.

The pressure continued for Elizabethtown (1-4-1) and within 1:07 of Waso's first of the year, he set up Rathsam for his first career goal in the second minute. Waso found himself with the ball in an attacking area and slid a pass to Rathsam, who made a darting run into the box. Waso's inch-perfect pass hit Rathsam's boot in stride and the junior took a touch to his right and finished off the play with a shot into the right side netting to make it 2-0 Blue Jays very early.

The Dutchmen had five first-half shots, but none of them tested Jays' goalie Brian Gately. The game went into halftime still 2-0.

JD Haaf had a scoring chance in front of goal, but LVC goalie Ryan Harding made a diving save on Haaf's rocket toward the right upper corner.

Noah Campomizzi struck a fluttering knuckler toward Gately's far post in the 55th minute, but the shot tailed right and wide of the senior's net. Gately needed to only make one save on the night, which came in the 89th minute off a free kick shot by Caleb Cekella. Shortly thereafter, Waso was off down the left sideline attacking a defender one-on-one at pace. Waso slipped his way past down the left toward the endline and brought the ball back toward Lebanon Valley's goal. He slotted a pass to Haaf near the penalty spot and Haaf smashed a shot into the left side of the goal to make it 3-0 in the 89th minute.

Elizabethtown and LVC had an equal amount of shots over the 90 minutes, 10-10, but the Jays had the advantage where it mattered most, on the scoreboard.

Waso finished the game with a goal and two assists while Rathsam and Haaf provided the other goals.

The Blue Jays are scheduled to host their annual Kicks for Cancer night this coming Wednesday, September 19, at 7:30 p.m. against Alvernia.
