ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team beat Washington & Lee for the very first time on Saturday, 2-0, after
Brooke Zehr and
Olivia Beachley scored for the Blue Jays and
Margo Donlin shut out the Generals in non-conference action at Wolf Field. Beachley's goal late in the second half sealed the game for the Blue Jays.
Washington & Lee (1-4) career saves leader Ariyel Yavalar stopped a shot by
Maggie Fees in the first 2:30 of the game as Elizabethtown (4-2) threatened to score early. The Blue Jays had five penalty corner opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the game.
As the Jays pushed for a goal,
Lauren Scheib wristed a pass from the right endline that zipped across the field and went right to Zehr, who was stationed at the far post for the easy tap-in. It was Zehr's first career goal and Scheib's first assist of the day.
W&L had a chance at 20:56 off a corner, but Donlin made a stop on Caroline Caruso in front of the cage. The senior goalie had stopped Lauren Paolano's attempt six minutes earlier off another corner chance.
The Generals' best scoring chance of the day came in the second half with E-town still ahead 1-0. Olivia Hewitt inserted a corner out top. The ball was then directed to Annaelise Thole's stick, left unmarked on the right wing. She drug the ball toward goal and wristed a shot toward the far post. Donlin had scooted across to her left and as the ball was going against her momentum, she got her stick out and blocked the ball and nothing came of the play to endanger the Jays' lead.
Much of the work during the game was done in the midfield and the work rates of
Emily Garvin,
Cassie Roberts, Beachley, and
Maggie Fees clogging up lanes to slow up the Washington & Lee attack played a role in the win.
Jesse Sartor,
Cecilia Carter, and
Tyler Wilson were also important parts of the defensive effort.
While the defense did its job, Beachley and the offense sealed the game late on off an E-town corner. Beachley inserted out top and Fees lashed a shot that deflected off Scheib's stick and went to Beachley at the left post. The junior stepped into play and knocked in the ball to make it 2-0 with 24 seconds to go.
Donlin made four saves for Elizabethtown and earned her third shutout of the season. Yavalar had five saves for the Generals.
E-town will host York (Pa.) on Wednesday, September 19, at 4:30 p.m.
