LANCASTER, Pa. -- Elizabethtown men's soccer traveled the spectrum of emotions Wednesday evening at Franklin & Marshall.
There was jubilation when
Cameron Sheva put the Blue Jays in front 10 minutes into the match. But an inspired start ended agonizingly as the Diplomats scored five unanswered goals, including four in the second half, to take back the Smith-Herr Boot, 5-1, at Tylus Field.
Though E-town has faced stiff competition early on this season, Wednesday marked another frustrating result for the Blue and Gray, who are still trying to crack the win column after five games for the first time in program history.
The teams wasted no time trying to get their respective offenses going.
Alex Musgnug headed an attempt wide less than three minutes in and the unbeaten Diplomats (5-0) got a pair of shots from A.J. Kopacz in the opening 10 minutes, one of which was stopped by Blue Jay keeper
Brian Gately.
Gately's save sent E-town off in transition and shortly after
Gilbert Waso had a shot blocked, Sheva took a quick pass from Musgnug and placed it in the lower left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
Gately and Diplomat keeper Christopher Amoruso traded saves with the Jays up a goal, but less than 10 minutes before halftime, the hosts found the equalizer.
Elizabethtown fell victim to another set piece when Connor Whitacre got a head on Steven Yakita's corner kick in the 37th minute to beat Gately and tie the game.
A Blue Jay foul in the box 2:43 into the second half saw Ryan Fincher convert a penalty kick for a 2-1 F&M lead. The Diplomats would pull away late with three goals in a 21-minute stretch.
Alex Lalovic made it 3-1 in the 65th minute sliding to knock home a cross from Jim Connolly. Dallen Moore scored unassisted in the 74th minute and Jack Brandt registered F&M's fifth goal of the night in the 85th.
Elizabethtown, despite its 0-4-1 record, had a heavy dose of shots again. The Blue Jays finished with 15 on the night, the fourth time in five games they've recorded 15 or more. Though Franklin & Marshall ended the night with 19, it had a sizable 9-3 difference in shots on goal.
Gately made three saves in 86:07 and
Andrew McGowan stopped one over the final 3:53. Both of Amoruso's saves for the Diplomats came in the first half.
The Diplomats earned the right to the Smith-Herr Boot for the fourth time in the last five years. Elizabethtown was coming off a 1-0 win over then-nationally-ranked F&M in last year's game. The Blue Jays were trying for consecutive victories in the popular non-conference rivalry for the first time since winning three in a row between 2002-04.
Wednesday night's game was originally slated for E-town's Ira R. Herr Field, but persistent late summer rains have kept both the men's and women's teams from a true home game. The Blue Jays' are scheduled to be at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Lebanon Valley.
