LANCASTER, Pa. -- A weather-related move had the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team playing on turf as opposed to its normal grass field at Ira R. Herr Stadium Friday night. The change didn't seem to matter as the Blue Jays rolled to a 4-2 win over Rutgers-Camden to start the season.
Elizabethtown (1-0) worked into possession through large portions of the first half. The Jays began opening up space for
Lydia Lawson to work up top and the junior forward would soon find herself with several good scoring chances.
Minutes after missing a goal-bound shot just left of the post, Lawson struck in the 13th minute with her first of the season.
Alli Lasky played a ball up to Lawson in the box, she juked off her defender and created enough space to touch the ball to her right and lace a high arcing shot at net. The ball, with enough pace on it, eluded the outstretched arms of the keeper and struck netting for the first of her two in the game.
Rutgers-Camden (0-1) weathered an early storm, and though down 1-0, the Raptors battled back. Ava Pizzaro tied the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute, latching onto a ball played by 2017 NJAC Co-Rookie of the Year Meghan Wachira, and chipping the keeper. The ball sailed into the night sky and dropped into the side netting right inside the left post.
Elizabethtown was opportunistic off a set piece, a corner in the 35th minute, and would ultimately take back the lead.
Kristin Wilkinson delivered her corner right into the middle of the six-yard box. The ball dropped within the mass of bodies around the goal.
Janelle Barna got a boot to the ball and pushed it on net. Natalie Eberhardt dropped down to make the save, but the rebound came to the feet of Lawson, who made no mistake with it and scored her second of the first half to lift E-town back in front, 2-1.
Lexis Evans had a chance just as the first half was coming to a close, but her shot was just wide right of the net. EC led 2-1 at the break.
Both goalies, Eberhardt (RUC) and
Christine Fox (ETOWN) had to make saves in the 61st minute. It started with Eberhardt, who had to make a save to prevent Lawson from recording a season-opening hat trick. 30 seconds later, at the other end of the field, Fox came up with a save on Taylor O'Rourke to prevent the Scarlet Raptors from tying the game.
The Blue Jays had success in the second half going down the right side of the field. Lasky and
Shannon Conlon connected for Elizabethtown's third goal in the 76th minute. Conlon worked back to the ball outside the top of the 18, bodied off her defender and played the ball to Lasky's feet. Lasky ripped a shot that beat the goalie on the ground to the far post for her first of the season. That gave E-town a little breathing room at 3-1 with under 15 minutes to go.
RUC nearly brought it back to a one-goal game off a corner of their own. Johanna Gibson stabbed at a ball that dropped right in front of goal, but her shot was stopped by Fox and cleared away by the defense. Less than a minute later, Lawson had the ball bearing down on goal from the right. She slotted a pass across the face of goal for an oncoming Barna, who put her shot into the net to seal the deal at 4-1 in the 82nd minute.
Wachira added a goal from the penalty spot in the 85th minute, but with the damage done, Elizabethtown left the neutral site with a 4-2 season-opening win.
Fox made five saves for the Blue Jays for her first career win. Eberhardt had four saves for the Raptors. Lawson posted two goals and an assist, while Lasky had a goal and an assist on the night.
Elizabethtown travels to Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, September 5.
