TOWSON, Md. -- Elizabethtown College junior Derek Manning took home Landmark Conference Player of the Year honors and was one of five Blue Jays selected to All-Landmark teams on Tuesday.
Â
Manning is the third Blue Jay to be named conference Player of the Year in the last four seasons, joining Luke Gatti (2015) and Kyle Fackler (2017). The sophomore-eligible outfielder hit a conference-best .457, while also pacing the league in hits (69), doubles (22), on base percentage (.506) and slugging percentage (.675).
Â
Manning ranked fourth in all of NCAA Division III in total doubles and doubles per game (0.56), was 10th in batting average and 19th in hits at the time of the postseason awards announcement. He established a new Elizabethtown single-season record for doubles, breaking Steve Luongo's previous mark of 21 from 2002 in the Jays' final game of the season last Saturday. The East Petersburg, Pennsylvania product's standout season placed him third in hits and fifth in batting average among E-town's single-season leaders. Manning, who hit safely in 32-of-39 games and led the Blue and Gray with 25 multi-hit games, also ranked second in the Landmark in runs scored (42) and total bases (102).
Â
Manning led E-town in eight offensive categories: batting average, hits, runs, doubles, RBIs (35), total bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage. He registered a .973 fielding percentage with 71 putouts and an assist.
Â
Manning was one of three Elizabethtown players named First Team, along with junior catcher Anthony Knight and senior pitcher Anthony Lippy.
Â
Knight set offensive career-highs in multiple categories and carried a batting average over .400 into late April before finishing with a .352 mark (43-for-122). The backstop collected 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 14 RBIs, 14 stolen bases and 39 runs scored.
Â
Knight was ranked third in the Landmark in walks (27), fifth in runs, fifth in stolen bases and fifth in on base percentage (.470) at the conclusion of the championship tournament. Defensively, he caught 11 runners stealing on 32 tries, good for third in the league.
Â
Lippy made a strong push for Pitcher of the Year honors, but landed his second all-conference selection and was tabbed First Team for the first time. The right-hander from Hanover, Pennsylvania tossed a conference-leading 83.1 innings and six complete games. Lippy's six victories and 62 strikeouts ranked second in the league, and his 2.92 earned run average third.
Â
Opposing batters hit just .270 against Lippy, who struck out six or more in seven of his 11 starts and tied a career-high with eight punchouts three different times. Lippy totaled the sixth most innings pitched in a season in E-town history this spring and leaves the program ranking seventh all-time with 231.0. He also ranks tied for fifth in career appearances (50), 10th in strikeouts (151) and tied for 10th in wins (17).
Â
Senior shortstop Nick Lorenz and junior pitcher Braden Stinar rounded out the Jays' 2018 all-conference honorees by landing on the Second Team.
Â
Lorenz was one of only two players to start and play in all 40 games. He had the fourth-highest batting average (.320) on the team and chased Manning for the single-season doubles record, eventually finishing with a career-high 19.
Â
An All-Landmark Second Team pick back in 2016 as well, Lorenz provided 49 hits, two triples, a home run, 29 RBIs and 36 runs scored. The reliable veteran from McAlisterville, Pennsylvania led the team and conference with 110 fielding assists. Lorenz topped 100 career runs and RBIs during the 2018 season and came within a game of tying head coach Adam Sheibley for the most played in program history (157 played, 155 starts).
Â
Lorenz ranks third in career at-bats (556), tied for fifth in home runs (14) and tied for ninth in doubles (37) at Elizabethtown. He was top 10 in the conference in doubles (second), at-bats (153, fifth), runs (seventh), triples (tied for seventh) and total bases (75, eighth).
Â
Stinar, of Forest Hill, Maryland, went 6-1 with 46 strikeouts in 57.1 innings to receive all-conference accolades for the first time.
Â
The righty struck out a career-high 11 in the Blue Jays' Landmark Championship tournament win over Moravian on May 12 and fanned nine in a victory at Juniata on April 28. Stinar did not lose in conference play, going 5-0 with a pair of complete games. He recorded the highest strikeout per nine innings rate on the team at 7.01 in league play.
Â
Stinar's best start of the year was a 104-pitch, seven-inning masterpiece against Moravain on March 26. He allowed just one unearned run, one walk and struck out seven in a winning effort. He was voted Landmark Pitcher of the Week on April 2 for that performance.
