Blue Jays downed by Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. -- If the defending Landmark Conference champions are to repeat, they'll have to do it the hard way.

Second-seeded Elizabethtown led briefly in Friday evening's conference tournament opener against third-seeded Scranton, but the Royals came through with five runs in the top of the ninth on their home field to pull out a 9-4 victory --their first against the Blue Jays this season.

Colby Smith homered, Derek Manning hit an RBI double and Brennan Snyder collected a sacrifice fly in a four-run fourth that allowed the Jays (20-18) to overcome a 3-0 deficit and take their only lead of the game.

Brian Markowski, who carried an ERA north of five into the game, kept Elizabethtown's offense off balance over the eight remaining innings. The senior southpaw didn't allow another run the rest of the way and struck out seven in a complete game victory.

Anthony Lippy struck out six and didn't walk a batter for the Blue Jays, but the Royals (21-19) tagged him for four runs on 13 hits over seven innings.

Elizabethtown's best chance to break the stalemate came in the bottom of the sixth when Mike Christy started the inning with a double down the right field line, but the Blue and Gray went 1-2-3 after that.

Patrick Mergel put the Royals back in front, 5-4, with a one-out single in the top of the ninth that scored pinch-runner Travis Adams.

Scranton scored four more runs before the inning came to a close, while the Blue Jays did themselves no favors with a pair of errors and a wild pitch.

Smith was the only Blue Jay with two hits, though five of the team's seven hits went for extra bases (home run and four doubles).

First baseman Ian McIntosh collected four hits and knocked in two. Teammates Kevin Nolan, Justin Howell and Schneider all had three hits and the Royals finished with 16 in the game.

Elizabethtown is back on the field at 11 a.m., Saturday, to face Moravian in an elimination game.
