Softball handed first Landmark losses

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- 12 days shy of a full month off of game action, the Elizabethtown College softball team dropped a pair of home Landmark Conference games to visiting Catholic on Saturday. The Cardinals used the long ball to do in the Blue Jays by finals of 6-2 and 7-3.

Game 1: Catholic 6, Elizabethtown 2
The Elizabethtown (12-4, 2-2 Landmark) offense seemed primed and ready to go despite the long layoff. Kirstin Blass dropped a single into center field to lead off the bottom of the first for the Blue Jays after Alyssa Wilkinson got Alyssa Keane to ground out to end the top half of the first. Blass was on second with Emma Varrato at the plate when the junior sent a high fly ball over the left field fence for her fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to give E-town a 2-0 lead.

Catholic (13-11, 4-4 Landmark) answered right back with a pair of runs in the second. Landmark hits leader Makayla Czan looped a ball into right field along the line with two outs that allowed two to score. The Cardinals added another two runs in the third on Marissa Deblasie's two-run homer to left. CUA led 4-2 after three innings.

E-town had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, but couldn't manufacture the runs to cut into Catholic's lead.

Megan Colline added to the Cardinals' lead in the seventh with a solo home run to make it 6-2. Kelly Lynch finished out her complete game, retiring the side in order to give game one to the visitors. Lynch improved to 7-5 while Wilkinson was handed her first loss of the season. Blass had the only multi-hit effort for the Jays while Varrato provided the only two RBIs of the game for EC. Kaitlyn Witmer, Christina Dark, and Brinley Schmidt also recorded hits for E-town.

Game 1: Catholic 7, Elizabethtown 3
Scoreless through the top of the second, Elizabethtown had a chance in the second to put some runs on the board after loading the bases with no outs. Game two starter Sabrina Scott pitched her way out of the jam for Catholic and came out of the second frame unscathed.

Her offense came through in the next half inning as Czan lifted a home run over the left field fencing, the third of the day for the Cardinals. It was a three-run shot after Giselle Diaz walked and Taylor Forgen singled.

Varrato, Sarah Personette, and Dark all singled in the third to load the bases for a second straight innings, but the Blue Jays were again denied any runs as Scott induced a ground ball for the third out of the inning.

Amber Sergas retired the Cardinals in order on a total of seven pitches in the fourth inning. Blass recorded putouts for the first two outs of the inning, catching a high pop up and fielding a grounder. Varrato ended the fourth with a catch in foul territory.

Catholic scored four runs on three hits in the sixth to open up the lead to 7-0.

Blass flew out to center field, but deep enough to allow Schmidt to score and break up the shutout.

Dark doubled in the seventh, her third hit of the game, and drove in Witmer to make it 7-2. Wendy Header singled to short and scored Personette as E-town trailed 7-3 with one out in the seventh and a little momentum on their side. Scott, though, got the final two outs without giving up another run and Catholic finished off the sweep with a 7-3 game-two win.

Dark led the Jays with a 3-for-4 effort in game two. Jess Kutteroff, Personette, and Sergas each had two hits and Elizabethtown outhit Catholic 12-7 in the loss.

Elizabethtown will be on the road tomorrow, Sunday, April 8, at Moravian for a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
