Blass blasts a pair, Blue Jays split with York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. -- Kirstin Blass had her first career multi-homer game to kick-start Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader between the Elizabethtown College softball team and York College (Pa.). The Blue Jays shut out the Spartans in game one while York (Pa.) held off E-town in game two, 5-3.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 4, York (Pa.) 0
Only one runner reached second base through the first two innings of game one as Amber Sergas and Virginia Lewis were both dialed in for their teams to start.

Lewis got the first two outs on six pitches, but that brought up Blass at the top of the order. Blass read the first three pitches, all balls. She took a strike and on the 3-1 count, jacked a high fly ball over the fencing in left field for a solo home run, her third (a new career-high) of the year, to make it 1-0 Elizabethtown (13-5).

Sergas kept at it, only allowing one hit through three innings and two hits through four. E-town added an insurance run in the top of the fifth. Lindsey Fasolo led off with a single. With one out and Sergas batting, Fasolo took off for second and made it safely. Then, Blass advanced her to third with a single through the right side, her second hit in three at-bats. Blass got the go ahead with two outs to take second base, and the Catawissa, Pa. native slid in safely. As the ball was thrown to second, Fasolo dashed home and beat the throw to make it 2-0.

As Sergas kept the York (Pa.) (18-8) bats at bay, Blass made sure the Blue Jays were in the free and clear. Wendy Header led off the top of the seventh with a base knock up the middle. Sergas moved her to second with the sacrifice bunt, but Header would score safely as she trotted home after Blass' seventh-inning blast to left, her second of the day and fourth of the season.

Sergas closed out the game in the seventh with a 10-pitch inning for her seventh complete game of the season and shutout. It was the first time this season the Spartans had been held to zero runs.

Blass was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and three RBIs. Her 16 on the season are also a new career best. Christina Dark and Brinley Schmidt also had multi-hit efforts for the Jays in the opener.

Game 2: York (Pa.) 5, Elizabethtown 3
Blass had her fourth hit of the day to lead off game two as she doubled to right center. Two batters later, Emma Varrato connected on E-town's second two-bagger of the inning to score Blass easily. The Blue Jays led 1-0 right away.

The Spartans scored once in the second and third innings, and put up a three-spot in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

Dark singled up the middle in the fifth to drive in Varrato from second base and cut the deficit to 5-2. The junior doubled in the seventh inning as Elizabethtown wasn't out of it yet. Her double scored Varrato for a second time in the game. The Jays had the runner in scoring position and tying run at the plate, but a grounder to short ended the comeback bid and York (Pa.) held on to split with E-town.

Blass went 2-for-4 and 5-for-8 overall on the day to push her season average back over .400. Varrato had a pair of hits and Dark led the Jays with three in game two. Alyssa Wilkinson pitched four innings before Dark came in to throw the final two.

Elizabethtown will face Moravian on Thursday, April 12, for a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
