No. 10 Moravian takes two from softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team ran into the Landmark Conference heavyweight Thursday afternoon at Blue & Grey Field. 10th-ranked Moravian shut out E-town in game one before claiming the sweep with a three-run victory in game two.

Moravian (19-3, 8-0 Landmark) sent Josie Novak to the mound in game one, one of the Landmark's top hurlers. Novak, already an eight-game winner on the season, held Elizabethtown (13-7, 2-4 Landmark) without a hit through 5.1 innings until Kirstin Blass broke up the no-hit bid with a single to center in the sixth inning. Blass stole second, but with two outs and a runner in scoring position, the Blue Jays couldn't bring the grad student home to score.

The Greyhounds scored once in the first to take a 1-0 lead, then added another run in the fourth. E-town held firm until Moravian broke things open in the sixth with a five-run innings to go up 7-0 with only three outs left for the Jays. Novak retired the side in order to finish off the complete game for the Greyhounds.

E-town had more success in game two in the hit department, recording seven in the nightcap. Christina Dark led the Blue Jays with two hits, while Emma Varrato, Kaitlyn Witmer, Lindsey Fasolo, Wendy Header, and Alyssa Wilkinson each had one hit apiece.

Elizabethtown had a runner in scoring position in the second and fourth innings, but Amanda Carisone got out of each without surrendering a run. Moravian scored all their runs in game two in the fourth inning, which was four runs on six hits.

The Jays had the bases loaded in the sixth and a golden opportunity to cut into the 4-0 deficit, but once again Carisone worked her way out of a jam. The Greyhounds' pitcher got a line out for the second out of the inning and a ground ball to second to close out the top half of the sixth and keep E-town scoreless.

Header had singled to lead off the seventh and scored on an error later in the inning to break up the shutout, though Carisone induced a ground ball for the final out of the game as Moravian secured the sweep to stay unbeaten in Landmark Conference play.

Elizabethtown will remain on the road and play at Scranton on Sunday, April 15, for a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
