Softball drops pair of low-scoring games at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Both Landmark Conference games on Sunday between the Elizabethtown College softball team and Scranton were low-scoring affairs with the Royals coming out on top in both. Jess Kutteroff had an RBI in game one and Kirstin Blass went 3-for-3 in game two for E-town.

Scranton (19-5, 6-2 Landmark) did its scoring in both games in a single inning. In game one, the Royals put up three runs in the third inning that gave the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Elizabethtown (13-9, 2-6 Landmark) had a chance right away to put runs on the board. Blass and Kutteroff each singled to lead off the game and put two runners on with no outs. Both runners advanced a base as now two were in scoring position. Scranton starter Morgan Rentzheimer got a pop out and fly out to end the threat and the inning.

Other than the Royals' three-run third, Amber Sergas kept the Blue Jays in the game, allowing no runs the other five innings of work.

Emma Varrato, Kaitlyn Witmer, and Christina Dark all had base hits in the sixth, each coming with an out. Once again, Rentzheimer worked out of a jam and a pair of fielder's choices helped the Royals maintain the 3-0 lead.

The Jays did break through in the seventh. Wendy Header led off with a single to center. Blass singled and advanced to second on the throw home that kept Header at third. Kutteroff looped a base hit to right field as Header came home on the play to make it 3-1. Facing another bases loaded jam, Rentzheimer settled down and got the final two outs of the inning to close the game.

Blass and Kutteroff both had two hits apiece in game one.

Jennifer Sweeney held Elizabethtown scoreless in game two, blanking the Blue Jays over seven innings. Blass went a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game and Lindsey Fasolo and Brinley Schmidt added one hit each for the Jays.

Scranton scored all three of its runs in the fourth inning, which was plenty in support of Sweeney, who went on to her 10th win of the season. She also struck out three. Alyssa Wilkinson threw 3.2 innings before Dark finished it out with 2.1 innings of work.

Elizabethtown plays at DeSales tomorrow, Monday, April 16, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
