Blue Jays complete sweep of Ursinus after game two comeback

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Amber Sergas shut down Ursinus in game one of the Elizabethtown College softball team's non-conference doubleheader on Thursday. E-town got the win and then completed the sweep after a game-two comeback effort.

Sergas only allowed one runner to get to second base through four innings. Ursinus (11-17) had a runner at third in the fifth inning after a leadoff double and an ensuing sac bunt to advance the base runner. Sergas got a pair of ground ball outs to end the threat and the inning.

A half inning earlier, the junior righty had led off the top of the fifth with a double to right center. Jess Kutteroff hit a two-out double to left center to score Sergas from second and give her a 1-0 lead, which would prove to be all that she would need. Brinley Schmidt drove in a run in the sixth for some insurance to make it 2-0.

Sergas struck out two batters in the seventh, the first and third outs with another ground ball out sandwiched between. It was her sixth win of the year and third shutout. She struck out six in the complete game effort.

Callie Crouse hit a two-run homer for Ursinus in the bottom of the first to give the Bears an immediate 2-0 lead. It was all the hosts could muster, though. Christina Dark entered the game needing one out in the bottom of the second to finish off the inning, which she did.

Dark pitched effectively over 5.1 innings on the bump. Both teams held each other in check until the sixth inning when Elizabethtown (15-9) doubled up Ursinus by the end of the top of the sixth frame.

Emma Varrato singled in Kirstin Blass to get E-town on the board, 2-1. Brinley Schmidt smacked a two-run double to center as Varrato and Kaitlyn Witmer scored on the play. Sarah Personette finished off the four-run inning for the Blue Jays with an RBI single up the middle to bring home Dark.

Dark sat the Bears down in order in the seventh to secure the two-game set for Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays will play at Susquehanna on Saturday, April 21, for a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
