Blue Jays bury Messiah in final home game

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Derek Manning had four hits, Mike Christy three and Nick Bein drilled a 3-run homer as Elizabethtown concluded its 2018 home schedule in style by hammering Messiah 14-4 on Monday afternoon.

Christy's two-run triple and a run-scoring double from Andrew Coleman highlighted a four-run second for the Blue Jays, and they never looked back.

Manning, named Landmark Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, recorded four singles to raise his Landmark Conference-leading batting average to .449 and scored three times. The East Petersburg, Pennsylvania native has a prodigious 21 multi-hit efforts in 32 games played this season.

Elizabethtown (18-16) continued its recent run of success, winning for the eighth time in 10 games.

The Falcons didn't do themselves any favors, either. They committed seven errors, including one in the fifth and another in the sixth that led to three E-town runs.

Blue Jay first baseman Nick Bein delivered the knockout blow in the seventh with a three-run bomb off the hillside in left center for his second career home run. Dylan Everly added an RBI single later in the inning and the Blue Jays took advantage of a Messiah error to increase their lead to 14-2.

Christy, now in his second season with the Jays, is four hits away from 100 in his career after a triple and two singles on Monday. The junior left fielder has caught the offensive bug with many of his teammates of late and has four straight multi-hit games during his current five-game hitting streak. Christy's batting average has gone up 43 points in his last four games and stands at a season-best .325 after three more hits against the Falcons.

Manning and Colby Smith led the way on the basepaths with three runs each. Christy, Nick Lorenz and JT Thompson all crossed home twice.

In a designated bullpen game for coach Adam Sheibley, freshman right-hander Tyler Dunbar started and tossed three scoreless stanzas for his second win of the season. Justin Cherry, Kelly Holdren and Cory Freedner each threw an inning or more of scoreless ball.

Though Messiah totaled 11 hits, it was never really in the game after falling behind 6-0 after four. Josh Hayner and Kyle Wickenheiser delivered a pair of hits for the visitors and Mark Leach hit a two-run single in the eighth. Just eight of the 14 runs scored by the Blue Jays were earned.

Elizabethtown will make up its Landmark Conference series at Drew this coming weekend to wrap up the regular season. The Blue Jays have already clinched a postseason berth, but can capture the No. 1 seed in the Landmark Championship tournament with a sweep of the Rangers.

The three-game series commences with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
