Sergas shutout gets softball a split with Albright

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Behind Amber Sergas' 10th complete game of the season in game two, the Elizabethtown College softball team salvaged a split with Albright Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Lions rallied late in game one to win 3-2 before the Jays blanked Albright in the second game. Emma Varrato went 4-for-6 on the day with an RBI for E-town.

Camille Sears and Alyssa Wilkinson were engaged in a pitchers' duel. Each held the other team scoreless through five innings. It was in the final two innings of game one that the scoring action took place. Albright (14-17) grabbed a 1-0 lead on Jessica Rodriguez's RBI single. A play earlier, Kirstin Blass fielded a grounder in the infield and, with the bases loaded, went home to Sarah Personette for the force out. Rodriguez singled the next at bat to bring home a run, but Wilkinson got out of a jam only allowing the one run when the Lions could have gotten more.

Her offense picked her up in the bottom half of the six with a pair of runs to take the lead. Blass singled up the middle to start the inning and moved up to second on a passed ball. Emma Varrato doubled down the right field line to score Blass and tie up the game. Personette hit a sac fly to center later in the inning as Varrato scored to give Elizabethtown (17-13) the lead.

The Lions rallied in the seventh with two runs of their own. Regina Milburn hit a fly ball to center field with a runner at third ready to tag, but Wendy Header's throw home had the runner hold up at third and prevent the game-tying run from scoring. Stephanie Pomante came on to pinch hit for Albright and hit a two-RBI single through the right side that gave the visitors the lead back at 3-2. Sears gave up a leadoff single to Wilkinson, but the Blue Jays couldn't get her around as Sears retired the side for the win.

Sergas was locked in a battle with Riley Gerenda in game two. Neither team scored a run through three innings until Elizabethtown struck for three in the fourth. Sergas got three straight ground ball outs in the top half of the fourth. Personette reached on an error to start the bottom half and advanced to second. Brinley Schmidt sent a base knock through the right side to allow Personette to score and give E-town a 1-0 lead. A second error in the inning allowed Madeline Hamilton to score after she had gotten on with a fielder's choice. Header, who had singled before the play the error was made on, wound up at third and scored a batter later on Blass' RBI hit through the left side. The Jays led 3-0 after four, more than enough for Sergas.

Sergas faced a bases loaded situation in the fifth, but a stellar defensive play just in the left field grass by Blass helped save a run. A pop out to Varrato ended the threat and the inning. The junior had a runner in scoring position in the sixth, but Albright was unable to advance Sears, who had hit a double to right center. Sergas finished off the side in the seventh to earn the shutout, her fourth of the season, and improved to 7-7 on the year.

Elizabethtown will host Juniata on Saturday, April 28, for a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Senior Day will take place before first pitch.
